Hi Experts,

I am targeting MBA FALL INTAKE 2023.
Currently, I am working in Project Management Role in MNC.
Today, I have received offer from another MNC company that is going to offer me an Core Engineering role (in Structural Engg, a specialised branch of Civil Engg) with better pay package.
I am tempted to shift the company, but my worries are:

1. As I am attempting to shift the company and the role both, will the LoRs of bosses from current company be okay to B-Schools.
The reason I am perplexed because it would'nt make sense for a Manager of upcoming company to give me a LoR, as I would be new to him and I would be submitting the applications within two months of joining and that too while working in Core Engg role.

2. Whether the shift of role from Project management to Core Engg be a good impression as professionally I am shifting to Engg role, but simultaneously I am applying to B-Schools to pursue Business Education.

Request to please address my queries.

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
Prashant

Hello prashantppp hope you are doing well

1. You can take the LORs from old employers/managers. The schools understand that people may not want to risk their standing with current bosses.

2. If you eventually want to get an MBA and pursue more generalist roles, think how would the new role benefit you other than the higher remuneration.
Are you not confident at this point that you have a competitive MBA applicant profile? Talk to an expert to discuss your prospects.
And if you think you do not have a competitive standing in the MBA applications process currently, think what could help you to improve on certain aspects. Does this new core engineering role offer any opportunities to further your experience in project management, team leading opportunities or cross functional stakeholder management? If not then you need to question your motivation for an MBA and this job both. And note that if you apply for MBA in the 2023 application cycle, you should ideally have impressive achievements and stories to talk about from your most recent work experience.

If you wish to discuss about the specifics of your profile do reach out.

Warm regards

Hello prashantppp,

Thanks for writing in.

You could always go ahead with recommendations from the bosses of your previous companies. Schools understand this. Additionally, you could explain the reasons for choosing a certain recommender over another in the Optional Essay (if provided) as well.

Generally, it is not a great idea to switch jobs a couple of months before applying to business school. However, you must make the switch only if there are other positive reasons beyond just the remuneration. Will this new job expose you to leadership? Will there be international exposure involved considering it is an MNC? In short, you need to evaluate this move keeping in mind the fact that you will have a fair bit of questions to answer regarding this move at the MBA interview stage and you need to have some convincing answers in place.

All the best!

Hi ExpertsGlobal,

Thank you for your valuable insights.

By "Will there be international exposure involved" , u mean international location or even international Client will
fine to show my case.

TIA.

Hi prashantppp,

You're welcome.

Both being based out of an international location and working with an international client count. Of course, the "extent" of the exposure will differ. Thus, the more the better.
