Like the immediate predecessor, the incumbent regime became the subject of unprecedented
ridicule, the more so because it was the first time an elected government would be overthrown
via a coup d'etat, and the entire members of the federal cabinet executed in public.

A. the more so because it was
B. more for its being
C. more for the reason that it was
D. the more so for the reason because it was
E. the reason of it being more so is that it was

What is the difference between and ?

I think it boils down to the correct idiom usage. "The more so" is the correct usage in this case as compared to "more for the reason".

let me try please critique.

the "more so" used in A is modifying the action for example ->
John was going to call his client to cancel the appointment, but he decided not to do so.

Similary the "more so" in option A modifies incumbent regime becoming subject of unprecedented ridicule... hence more so fits the bill....

Option C.
if we used "more" in a comparative way then we need to pair it with "than".
For example : I like sofia vergara more for her accent than for her looks.
There is no "than" in the sentence hence C is wrong.

HTH

I pick this option more to maintain the parallelism .... as this part of the sentence must be parallel to later one " , and the entire members of the"

Looks like the main difference between A and C is that the structure of C actually changes the originally meaning.

"More for the reason that it was" could be interpreted as the new gov was under ridicule because of a different reason from the reason that the prior gov was. Parallelism here is that both governments were ridiculed for the same reason, but that the following government was under comparatively MORE ridicule.

Hope this helps

only A fits best.
being = neither in B nor in E is used correctly for GMAT.
D - way to lengthy
C - wordier than A

A. the more so because it was- Correct.
B. more for its being- More should be followed by than in order to be correct. We do not need more here.
C. more for the reason that it was-Same as B.
D. the more so for the reason because it was-Sounds akward.
E. the reason of it being more so is that it was-Sounds akward too.

Tha phrase is correct as it is.

Consider "the more so" an idiomatic usage. "So" refers to the action / event in the previous clause. Here "so" refers to "the incumbent regime became the subject of unprecedented ridicule". "The more so because..." means "the incumbent regime became the subject of unprecedented ridicule more because....".

Hi, how can we rule out option C. ?

In C there should not be a comma before "more", and "than" is missing for comparative "more". (In A "the more so" is an idiom and hence "than" is not required). The correct structure for C would be:

The incumbent regime became the subject of unprecedented ridicule more because ... than because ...
OR
The incumbent regime became the subject of unprecedented ridicule more for the reason that ... than for the reason that...

The former is better because of concision.
