Referring to the diagram below, since all the circles touch at point D, then BC = CD = 2 (Radius of the smallest circle)

Therefore BD = Radius of the circle with center B = BD = 2 + 2 = 4

Now, AB = BD = 2

therefore AD = Radius of center A = AD = 2 + 2 = 4

Area =  \pi r^2 = 4^2 \pi = 16 \pi

It is given diameter of the small circle is 2, so radius of the next big circle is 2.
Diameter of the second big circle is 4, which is also the radius of the biggest circle. 
Hence radius of A is 4
Area = pi*4^2
= 16pi
Answer is D

YZ is the diameter of the smallest circle. We know that YZ = 2. Also, notice that YZ is the radius of the medium sized circle. So, the diameter of the medium sized circle would be YZ + YZ = 2 + 2 = 4. And, this diameter (4) would be the radius of the largest circle, of whose area we need to find. So, pi*(4)^2 = 16pi.
