Since they have to participate fresh, they shouldn't practice associative strategy on the day before.

Nice question, it is pretty easy to narrow down to A and E.
E is generalizing more broadly so I would eliminate it on the grounds of it being over reaching.
A is the correct answer as the passage also hints or talks about the day before the race and associative strategies can lead to exhaustion.
