Let sqrt 0.17 = a
Now a is between sqrt 0.16 (which is 0.4) and sqrt 0.25 (which is 0.5) , meaning a is between 0.4 and 0.5.
Now think about how this will look on the number line:
0.4 ........................................................................0.45............................................................................0.5
sqrt 0.16 .......sqrt 0.17...... sqrt 0.18.....................0.45............................................................sqrt 0.24... sqrt 0.25
since 0.17 is much more closer to 0.16 than it is to 0.25 , it will be definitely less than the mid point between 0.4 and 0.5. Hope this helps!

Hi
Bunuel, just had a small doubt, how do we arrive at "√0.17 is closer to 0.4 than it is to 0.5?". I kind of assumed the same while solving the question, but was still not confident eliminating it since I didn't have an exact value of √0.17.
