The lines between GM and marketing in terms of job responsibilities can be blurry, many marketing positions will feel GM like & GM rotations will generally have marketing rotations as an option. Some brand positions will hire GM, but definitely many will be looking for marketing concentrations. I think it's partially just a function of which structure is more common in the industry. If you go to a school that doesn't require concentrations, the classes you take for GM will benefit marketing and vice versa. In my experience thus far, marketing isn't any more difficult to get into...it probably depends on the school on what most companies are recruiting for. For internationals, however, it's true it's difficult to get into marketing & perhaps there's a little better chance with GM.

Ah, thanks buddy for being forthright, 2 kudos.

Thanks for pointing out that international students have difficulty getting a marketing job, even though i like it, many people advised me againist taking up a marketing concentration saying that especially when it comes to placements in marketing internationals have less chances, but that its different when it comes to GM as its more of a overall managing role.

I thought my familiarity with BI and DW could be put to good use in Marketing.

Sorry to bump, but

Does one has to necessarily take Marketing or can mba General Management people also apply for brand Management jobs?

I work for a leading CPG company and we expect our marketers to be general managers. We recruit our associate marketing managers all from top MBA programs (HBS, Kellogg, Stanford, Ross, etc.) and for the most part, there isn't a requirement for a marketing specialization or a masters in marketing. HBS probably is the biggest place that we recruit from and they don't even have specializations. Granted if your school offers a marketing track and you don't take it even though you're planning on working in that field, that's your fault for not taking that opportunity to learn things that will be meaningful to you in your career.

Oh and data-driven marketing is really a big deal these days. I'm actually considering Booth over Kellogg for marketing for just that reason.

I would generally agree with this (except for that last line - but that's a different post), but would recommend if you're interested in marketing that you talk to the marketing club at the schools you're considering to find out more about how many of the companies in your desired industry actually recruit at that school. Post graduation, I will be working for a well known company that hires a lot of brand managers, and they don't recruit at all of the top MBA programs.

As for whether you need a marketing major on your diploma: nobody really cares about MBA majors. But, they will care that you have the skills and knowledge in marketing that you will need to do your job. Taking the courses to acquire that knowledge will generally mean that you end up with a marketing major if your school offers it.
