Hi, I will be having an work experience of 2yrs by the time I start applying to the universities. I am aiming for GMAT score above 720. My main target is to get into top 30 universities and mostly in Europe.
I did my undergraduation from reputed college (IIT) in electrical engineering. I am currently working as Assistant Manager in a world reputed metal industry (Vedanta Resources).
Is my aim too ambitious as i am having very less experience and aiming at very top universities.
I also request you all to suggest me how to improve my GMAT score.
Thanks

There are several programs in the US (don't know any similar programs in Europe) for early career candidates, take a look at this list: https://aringo.com/deferred-enrollment/

Hi yogithkrishna,

While you have a fine academic background and work experience with a very reputed name, the duration of your work experience will be quite on the borderline for the programs you are targetting. We recommend that you get at least one additional year of work experience. Not only will this help you leverage your existing credentials but also provide you a greater number of talking points for your essays. Use this time wisely in order to build your profile :)

All the best!

Hi.
Currently, I have about 2.5 years of work experience (role- project management) and am on a career break. I have a GMAT score of 750. Assuming I am not able to score a job (though I will be doing other activities like CFA (hoping to finish at least L2 by then) and participating in local/ international clubs activities during this time), is there any way I can justify my work experience (in terms of quantity) and the career gap? Additionally, any B schools in the top 50 where this might not be much of an issue. I am looking at the September 2023 intake for 2 year MBAs.
I am pretty much covered when it comes to academics. Also did a few extracurricular activities in my undergraduate study period.

Hi yogithkrishna I have worked with successful applicants who had 2 years upon applying which means 3 years upon matriculation. More is better, but it's passable for sure, and not uncommon. However the obstacle I am seeing here is the European schools, while accepting of lower test scores, are not as accepting of less work experience. It's not an absolute statement but I suspect LBS might try to get you to apply to their MIM. What you would need to do is really have/demonstrate the impact you have had in your job. Does your resume have a lot of numbers in it from things you did? If not you might want to wait or increase your GMAT and set your sights on US schools. As everyone suggests, TTP is a great way and as a former tutor I do recommend you cut to the chase and find a good tutor. I know of a good one that a client used for verbal with reasonable rates and i can send you his info if you PM me.

i am quite worried about this. you really want at least 3 years of WE upon matriculation and I don't think the idea of career break is going to fare well for you in the application process. You look less marketable and attractive to their corporate recruiters to be honest, to have a huge gap there. I would encourage you to find a job ASAP and sort out whatever else in your off hours, as everyone does. I realize CFA and all that but you look a bit fragile to have to leave work to do this. Sorry I dont have better news.

Hello JoseDelgado,

Thanks for writing in.

Even considering the strengths in your profile (such as the good GMAT score), a career gap would be a cause of concern for any business school. While one can always put forth an explanation for the gap (even if it is a convincing one), a gap is best avoided. Therefore, you must find a job on an immediate basis.

All the best!
