Hello everyone,
Like many GMAT aspirants, I too am saddled with the question of how to improve my performance in RC. I have gone through suggestions by many experts and have improved markedly from when i started 3 months ago. I practice questions from OG on this website itself, with the timer.
Now i have come to level where i am consistently answering more than 80% to 90% questions of the 600-700 level correctly (Avg time incl reading passage is less than 75 secs/question). I am able to answer on an avg 4/6 questions correctly of the 700 level with an avg time of 120 sec/question.
Can some one pls tell me what is the level I need to reach (in terms of accuracy and timing) in the 600-700 level and 700+ level questions in order to get a V40. I know a V40 depends on one's performance in CR and SC too..but assuming that those two are taken care of ...
Any rough idea about this will be very helpful for me....'coz am looking for a specific target to achieve in RC..

Hi Nielgmat.
To score V40, you need to get around 80 percent or a little more of the counted verbal questions you see correct.
If you're scoring at that level, you'll see only medium and hard questions on the verbal section of your GMAT. So, you need to get 80 percent of 600-700- and 700-level questions correct.
However, that 80 percent does not apply evenly across the board. Ideally, you'd get 100 percent of the medium questions correct. Then, you'd get 80 to 90 percent of the medium-hard questions correct, and enough hard questions correct to get to 80 percent correct overall.
So, we could say that, to score V40+, you need to get close to 100 percent of 600 - 700-level questions correct, 80 to 90 percent of the easier 700-level questions correct, and perhaps 60 percent of harder 700-level questions correct when you are practicing with individual questions, though to be safe, I think you should get at least 70 percent of 700-level questions correct, at least if you are doing them untimed.
Regarding the time per RC question, around two minutes per question including time spent reading the passage would be great.
That said, your best move is to do much of your practice UNTIMED and shoot for close to 100 percent accuracy untimed. Then, once you're getting the questions correct virtually all the time, you can work on reducing the time per question until you're answering them at test pace.

Many GMATers become too fixated on the 'implied level' of the questions that they're working on - instead of what really matters: defining WHY they're getting questions wrong and becoming more efficient at approaching the overall Exam. It's also worth noting that just because a 3rd-party describes a question as "700 level" does not necessarily make it so. To hit a V40+ on the Official GMAT, you need to have a variety of skills AND you need to be able to shift quickly and seamlessly among the various question types that you'll see on Test Day. While short Quizzes that focus on a particular type/level of question can be useful practice, they won't properly mimic what you'll experience when working through an adaptive, full-length Verbal section (either on a CAT or on the Official GMAT). As such, we need to take a closer look at how you've been performing on your CATs/mocks - and in the broader sense, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:
Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
