'less' is appropriate. Also, 'they' is inappropriate- can be 'it' to refer to the Minivans - but not 'they' - 'they' can refer to passengers incorrectly. b/w A and D - A is my choice.

b/w A and D i prefer D.
In A the second clause in a compound sentense is not a independent clause as it should be... So D is my choice.

I would go with A since D introduces 2 participial phrases back to back and is in that respect confusing.

B makes the same mistake by introducing a clause followed immediately by a participial phrase. Also, "they" in B is superfluous. Remove the two parenthetical elements and you are left with:

Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride

The part in red is part of the independent clause. Looking ONLY at the independent clause in red, you see that "they" is superfluous and even wrong.

Thanks.

Between A and D I go for A too.
In D placement of "carrying as many as.." makes it unclear what is being compared - carrying of seven passengers or the fact that they cost less, etc. D seems to be changing the meaning of the sentence.

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, I would vote for this choie

B. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less, this choice is wrong, it suffers from sentence run error and secondly they at the end makes it wordy and awkward
C. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers, in comparison with most sport utility vehicles, and have a lower cost, they Wrong choice
D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, this sound like the comparison here is between only minivans which carry seven passagers and minivans. the comparasion is between minivans and sports utility cars. the modification clause carrying as many as seven passengers needs an introduction. it could start with which or something else
E. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles the cost is lower, and they wordy and awkward

D is the OA. With this info, can anyone find any mistake in A or can we assume that the OA is wrong.

Pardon me for the late entry .

Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride.

This has a comparison problem. The orginal statement seems to compare 'seven passengers" to the "sports vehicles". Hence the orginal statement is out. IT has to compare Minivans with the Sports vehicle.

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, - OUT - Had this statment been given as "Minivans compared with SUVs, carry 7 people, cost less...then it would have been correct. or, Minivans carry as many as seven people compared to the SUVs which carry...costs less... Then this would have been correct.

B. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less, - Corrects the comparison but introduces "THEY" .. parallelism problem. - OUT

C. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers, in comparison with most sport utility vehicles, and have a lower cost, they - Again compares passengers with SUV - Out

D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, - Here the introduction of a gerund, does not alter...Hence it compares Minivans compared to SUV,- Correct one. (The comparison is done with Minivans while they carry 7 people. And not just Minivans to SUV in general).

E. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles the cost is lower, and they - Corrects the comparison, but introduces parallelism problem with "THEY". OUT

I hope this helped.

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,

I think the problem with A, a simple sentence, might be the varying verb tense. carry-compared-cost.
"Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and when compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,..." would have been better.

D solves this by using a compound sentence - participal phrase.
"Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,..."
is the same as
"Carrying as many as seven passengers, Minivans, [compared with most sport utility vehicles,] cost less..."
This is similar to "Being a captain, I arranged the troops".

I hope this helped.

The conjunction 'and' is correctly used in choice A - essentially, 2 things are being said about minivans.
1. they can carry 7 passengers
2. compared with SUVs, they cost less, give better mileage, have a smoother ride, and let people get in and out easily

These 2 points have been joined using "and". i.e.
(Minivans carry as many as seven passengers) and
(compared with most sport utility vehicles, give A, B, C and D.)

D makes it sound as though you are comparing "minivans that carry 7 passengers" with SUVs.

Pls discuss more to clarify.

Below is my understanding.

I removed the non-essential modifier "compared with most sport utility vehicles" in the choice A. Then Choice A reads as below. You can see the list is broken.

"Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and cost less, get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride"

list with commas must be as below

carry as many as seven passengers, cost less, get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride

but not as below

carry as many as seven passengers and cost less, get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride
