Moody, who manages the National Numismatics Collection at the National Museum of American History, started buying unpainted miniature soldiers and to do it soon got swept into the field of military history, researching not only the battles themselves but the uniforms worn at the time.

A. and to do it soon got swept
B. and doing it soon got swept
C. and to do this soon got him swept
D. and doing so soon got swept
E. and to do it would soon got swept

In option A,B,E
There is "It" present which is a pronoun in this case. We know that a pronoun can refer only to a noun/gerund. However in this case, "IT" is referring to the whole situation of buying unpainted miniature soldiers. This is completely wrong

In option C "To do" violates the parallelism with buying.

Option D has none of the above violations
