yup, E. These kinds of questions are basically testing proper comparison and parallelism.

This specific one says 'built in X .... than in Y'. The last part is what we need, and only E matches that.

Re: More ancient Egyptian temples were constructed in the reign of Ramses [#permalink]
In the question , reign of Ramses 2 saw more construction of temples than any other reign , So "as in" will not convey the appropriate meaning . "As in" gives more example like the current reign which is not the case here . After this thought process , E turns out to be clear winner .

options A,B,C and D have incorrect comparison
the correct comparison is more X than Y
So correct option - E

Hi chetan2u,
In choice D, why can't elipsis be at play here." than [in the reign of] others". Thanks in advance.

Hi

Than others means comparison is between OTHERS and some NOUN..
So here it would be other temples..

Another example..
He is more interested in playing games than others ( are interested in playing games)... parallelism is between he and others
He is more interested in playing games than in any other activity....

More ancient Egyptian temples were constructed in the reign of Ramses II than others
Sounds fine, but the comparison in the original sentence is between reigns and not about temples (building types). D changes the meaning.
Hope this explanation is correct.

Thanks.

(A) as in any other
(B) as any other
(C) as in others
(D) than others
(E) than in any other

Took 18 seconds to do this Q.

Main Issues:

1) Correct idiom is "more than" and not "more as".
2) Comparison: Two reigns are being compared so "in..." should be parallel to "in..."

(A) as in any other - Wrong: Idiom
(B) as any other - Wrong: Idiom; Comparison
(C) as in others - Wrong: Idiom
(D) than others - Wrong: Comparison
(E) than in any other - Correct

Re: More ancient Egyptian temples were constructed in the reign of Ramses [#permalink]
More ancient Egyptian temples were constructed in the reign of Ramses II as in any other.

Quote:
(A) as in any other

More ............as ....... is the wrong idiom.
More..........than........ is the correct one.
Quote:
(B) as any other

Same reason as in A.
Quote:
(C) as in others

Same reason as in A.
Quote:
(D) than others

Okay, the idiom is now correct. Now let's see what are being compared.
More [ ancient Egyptian temples were constructed ][ in the reign of Ramses ] than [others].
what does the "others" refers to? ancient Egyptian temples? that wouldn't make sense.
Also the parallelism is off.
So D is out.
Quote:
(E) than in any other

Clear comparison.
More [ ancient Egyptian temples were constructed ][ in the reign of Ramses ] than [ in any other]
Clean parallelism, in the reign of Ramses is in parallel with "in any other"
E is our answer.
