Hi

Option (A) in its sanguine view of the embracing of democracy by authoritarian rulers, contradicts paragraph 1 and so we cannot infer it.

It is a perfect example of a GMAT trap question.

In these kinds of questions, don't follow the gut or intuition but rather look for hints in the question itself. Almost 100% of the time, the answer will be there !

The question says" Reasonably" infered means in a sensible or moderate way, not extreme.

Lets look at the options
For Inference questions we don't need to overthink it; it should be present in the passage.

Just by reading it, we can cancel  out B,C, and E.

(A) Many authoritarian rulers would eventually institute democratic reform even if not pressured to do so
(B) Citizen dissatisfaction in authoritarian regimes is highest when authoritarian rule is first imposed - Not Mentioned In the passage
(C) Popular support for authoritarian regimes is lowest when economic conditions are weak- Not Mentioned In the passage.
(D) Absolute power in an authoritarian society cannot be maintained indefinitely if the society does not condone the regime
(E) Citizens view human rights abuses as the only objectionable aspect of authoritarian regimes- Mentioned but not the Only Objectionable aspect

Now B/w A & D

Both are somewhat mentioned in the passage and have links to the passage.

Now, for A, when we read the first and last paragraphs, it implies that, but can it be "Reasonably" Infered.
What if the pressure they are experiencing is not objective but subjective?
What if many means 90% or 50% or 20%.
What if they are just being Democratic for some time and eventually return to autocratic rule when things are sorted .
So this has many open questions, and we can't reasonably infer it on the basis of the given information.

However, for D - it is stated in the passage and can be directly inferred.
"Three major types of changes can contribute to a society's no longer condoning the continuation of authoritarian rule."

Which means if these changes are practiced or achieved, the autorcartic Rule would be abolished and Democracy will prevail

Read paragraph 5. Authoritarian rulers move towards democracy because they see that “their only hope of retaining some power in the future” is in compromising with the societal forces putting pressure on them. Hence (E) is correct.

Can someone explain ans choices for question 3.
Explanation

3. Which one of the following titles most completely summarizes the content of the passage?

Explanation

(D) has it all: the right topic (authoritarian rulers), the right scope (their shift towards democracy), and the reasons for the shift (the social forces).

(A) focuses solely on dissent, rather than the broader forces and their effect on the rulers.

The passage is too broad to support “A Case Study” (B), and “human rights abuses” is way too narrow, lines 21-22 only.

(C)’s “democratic coalitions” has no support anywhere in the text, and (E) lacks the topic of authoritarian rulers altogether.

Answer: D
