option e : all popular sci fi movies have acceptable plots
negated statement : all sci fi movies do not have acceptable plots
result : the plan to increase viewership by making more acceptable plots will fail
the argument says that to address the issue of movies under performing commercially they need more acceptable plots.
isnt it assuming that acceptable plots is the reason behind movies not performing commercially
please guide me where i went wrong in my understanding
Hi Vibha
Let us try to analyze the stimulus.
Premises given: 1) Most sci-fi movies released in the past few years have not performed commercially.
2) Scriptwriters need to develop better impressions about the possible future by X, Y, Z methods...
Conclusion: The above measure would successfully address the issue of sci-fi movies not performing commercially.
In order to arrive at the conclusion, we not only need to assess the conclusion but we need to assess the conclusion
given the premises mentioned in the stimulus ie; the assumption must tell us how the conclusion holds in the presence of the premises, and not only by itself.
Similarly, the negation of the assumption should negate the conclusion
taking into account the premises. Let us consider option (E).
E) all popular sci-fi fiction movies have acceptable plots.I would like to point out a couple of errors that you have made in negating option (E). The opposite of "all have X" is not "all do not have X" but "some do not have X". "All" translates to "every single one of". To negate that, it is enough if "some" of the set do not satisfy the criterion - it is not necessary for "every single one of" the set to not satisfy the criterion.
Secondly, option (E) only talks about "popular" sci-fi movies having acceptable plots - in negating, you have missed out the important "popular" qualification for this option.
Given the above, the negated form of option (E) will be:
Some popular sci-fi movies do not have acceptable plots. As you can see clearly, the above statement does not explain how, given poor commercial performance of recent sci-fi movies and scriptwriters making better impressions about the future, the problem of poor commercial performance
will not be rectified. Now consider the same approach with option (C).
C) Making the plot more acceptable to general public shall increase the viewership of the movie.
Negated (C): Making the plot more acceptable to general public shall
not increase the viewership of the movie.
Clearly, if the negated version is true, then developing better impressions of the future (and thereby making the plot more acceptable) will not solve the problem of poor commercial performance of recent sci-fi movies. The conclusion stands negated when taking into account the given premises. This makes (C) the correct answer.
Hope this helps.
