This problem presents several clear decision points for you to assess: the tense choice between “came” and “have come” and the idiomatic choice between “higher...and/or lower THAN” and “higher...and/or lower COMPARED TO” are the most obvious. The choice of comparison idiom is easier, so start there: “Higher/lower…compared to” is a redundant structure that is always incorrect, so you can confidently eliminate (A) and (C).
While you could examine tense next, the difference in (D) – it lacks the “which” clause – is easier: without the “which” clause (D) illogically states: “research teams have come up with other calculations and strayed a little bit higher or lower than that figure.” The research teams did not stray nor can they be compared to figures. The calculations are what strayed and can be compared – (D) suffers from a sentence construction error that creates illogical meaning.
For the remaining two choices – (B) and (E) – there is the difference in tense and the difference between “and” and “or” toward the end of each answer. Both are incorrect in (B) – it creates an illogical timeline to say that the researchers came up with figures in the past “that have strayed” since then. Either they both need to be in the simple past or both in the present perfect. Furthermore, the use of “and” is illogical – a calculation was not simultaneously a little higher AND a little lower but rather a little higher OR a little lower. Only (E) properly matches the two present perfect tenses and uses the correct “or.”

A and B are out because, by saying "came up with", they insinuate that the event of "coming up with calculations" by all these countries occurred once in the past. What the passage is actually trying to say is that these countries have come up with different numbers over a period of time, which is confirmed by the fact that sometimes the numbers were higher and sometimes they were lower.
C and D are out because, logically, the parallelism here (through use of the conjunction 'and') suggests that it is the countries, not the calculations, that have strayed higher or lower than the figure of 8848 meters. This is obviously illogical and doesn't make sense.
E is correct because it correctly utilizes "have come up" and "which" correctly refers to the calculations
