We agree with the previous post. Duke/Fuqua is several steps above Kelley. That would be our choice. While it's a long shot, can you potentially talk to Fuqua about potential financial aid? You can use the Kelley offer as leverage, though it might not amount to much given that Fuqua knows the gap in reputation between their program and the one at Indiana. Still, it's worth a shot to ask. If they say, no then you obviously need to evaluate your financial wherewithal and the ROI on your education.

I wouldn't worry about the cost of the MBA quite yet. There are so many factors. Plus, perhaps you decide not to attend? Maybe you are in a position to get scholarship money for the MBA? Don't make decisions in the future for today such as the one you are describing.

Hope that helps,
Admissions

Hi admissionado,

Thank you so much for your response! I have also heard that the MQM program at Duke is often considered a “money-maker” degree for the school and the MBA programs would be more worthwhile. Is this perception accurate in any way? Would you be of the opinion that attending IU Kelley would be a major disadvantage for me? The MSIS program does have great employment statistics and a large majority of students end up in Chicago, which is where I’m looking to be long-term. I’ve been going back and forth on this for a long time and am really unsure of what to do. Thank you so much for your insight!

Hi Yashika,

Thank you so much for your response! I have also seen on various forums that Kelley’s MSIS program is highly ranked, but I am not sure which rankings source would be the most accurate. Do you have any recommendations on which ranking sources would be the best to review?

Q: I have also heard that the MQM program at Duke is often considered a “money-maker” degree for the school and the MBA programs would be more worthwhile. Is this perception accurate in any way?

A: To be honest, Duke's budget/profitability really has no bearing on you. If the program is a good fit for you and you get a lot out of it, why does it matter if it's a "money maker?" The HBS Executive MBA program is a huge money maker for Harvard (especially compared to the MBA program) but many of the attendees find it to be extremely valuable. I don't believe it should really be a primary consideration for you.

Q: Would you be of the opinion that attending IU Kelley would be a major disadvantage for me?

A: Not at all. My colleagues and I are simply trying to help you make a difficult decision. It can be helpful to give strong opinions so you can draw a clear line in the sand. If, after weighing all the factors, you decide that IU Kelley is a better fit then you will most definitely get a lot out of it. The program's proximity to Chicago is absolutely valid.
