Hey guys,
I took my first (second) GMAT yesterday and scored
710 (Q50 and V37).
ContextI'm a male 27 Y.O. Industrial engineer with 2.5 years of W.E. from Chile. I have been working in the same university where I got my engineering degree in a small team who represent the university as a consultant firm with big company clients (one of the biggest mining company in Chile, the national railway company and others). I am the only one of the full time members of the team who has not a post graduate degree and have reached the same position as the others with a masters degree. Also, I have founded a small company dedicated to create a hangover prevention drink with only food ingredients (no chemicals added, we have achieved a working formula), also I am part of a entrepreneurship dedicated to stimulate clouds in order to increase the raining probabilities (we have been in a couple of meetings with the Minister of Agriculture) and also I am part of another entrepreneurship who has created an small electric vehicle which is faster than a small electric bike (our vehicle can achieve 80 km/h) and also safer. I also speak spanish, english, intermediate french and basic japanese (JLPT 5 level of japanese). I have also been a assitant professor for 2 undergrad courses, 2 masters degree courses, professor of a assets management course and professor for a cuarter (we had split the course with 3 other professors) of an industrial engineering course.
My drawback is that I have a
low GPA 3.24/4, my former university is know for deflating the grades (professors are gods who don't reward knoledge but punish ignorance).
AIMI want to pursue a MBA from MIT's SLOAN, since they dont require a TOEFL my plan is to apply un R1 to SLOAN and prepare the TOEFL to apply to R2 to other universities (Wharton, Harvard, Kellog, etc.)
Why an MBA?I wanted to do a master in data analytics but I had the pleasure to talk with a SLOAN allumni and he inntroduced me the idea of an MBA. I managed to have a meeting with a MIT representative in Latin America and he showed me the numbers of why an MBA and that I should take the GMAT (before this meeting, I barely even know the existence of the GMAT). This was August 1st.
GMAT Preparation/StudyThe first thing I did was to know my level, took the GMATPrep CAT 1 and scored 640. Since my work is really time demanding and as you have read before I dont have to much spare time, I asked if I could take 2 weeks off from work (inn the 2.5 years, never had a week off), after some negotiation and struggle, I was able to have the last 2 weeks of Agust off. I had my GMAT scheduled for August 29.
My CAT showed that a had a good Quant but a awful verbal(Q40 somthing vs. V 34) so I decided to do the following:
For quant I got the Manhattan Advance Quant (really good to learn the GMAT tricks).
For verbal I got the GMAT verbal OG and, since SC was my worse topic (being RC the best one), used Ready4GMAT to learn SC basics.
After finishing the above, I sticked to GMATPrep (the 6 test and the question bank).
The first 2 weeks of August, I finished the Manhattan Advance Quant and the Ready4GMAT SC chapter.
When my weeks off started, I went full on the question bank, verbal OG and the mock test. During this time, I took 1 mock every 2 days
My second mock test showed an improvement, 690 (Q 48-49, V 35), the next one was 710 (Q 50, V 36), but after that one, and since the only thing I did for the next 4 days was study (I didn't even got out of my house), my scored started to go down with another 710, then a 700 and finally a 690. After the last mock I realized that I had to take more breaks so I started hitting the gym again (I do sports 6 time a week on a normal basis), then finally achieved a 720 on the 6th mock.
Two days later I went to the test center to take the GMAT, I did an outstanding quant which I felt that I had a perfect score, and halfway through verbal, THE INTERNET CONNECTION FROM THE TEST CENTER FAILED and they had to reschedule everyone who was taking a test that moment, so there was I weeks off finished, no GMAT taken yet, no new date for my GMAT at the moment and burned off from all the study.
When I came back to my work, my absence was really felt and came to a bunch of meeting the first day in another city with our current client, and had (I still have actually) a lot of job to do.
My study rythm went down because of the lack of time and after 3 days of fights with Pearson, I got another shot for September 12.
I retake the first 2 GMATPrep mock tests and scored 710 and 740 (Q 51 and V 39) though since I was retaking it, I didn't take those score really serious.
So I went to take the test and got
my official scores (710 Q 50 V 37, IR 7/8 and AWA 5.0/6.0), which I am wishing to be enough to get in SLOAN.
AftermathI think I did well for the time I got, but I should have pourchased the Veritas mock test pack for 20 USD so I didnt had to retake the GMATPrep mocks.
Also, with a little bit more of time, I would have taken the eGMAT course for SC and maybe improve a couple of points on verbal (SC is my weakest point).
Be prepare for anything, I never ever heard about the connection being lost in a test center and as I asked them on my second visit, it was the first time in years they had a problem like this.
Thats all and I hope to achive my goal.
EDIT: Added the AWA score
