Manhattan Q-46 is as good as GMAT Q-49
Verbal of manhattan is good estimate.

I think you should focus more in identifying the pattern among your mistakes. 720 seems a little difficult at your current level of preparedness so I would say that target a safe 700 at this time. But since you have about a month so you can work on your verbal to take it to a level of around 40 (which is too hard to do in a month without proper guidance) and then you can hope to crack a 720.

All the best!!! :)

Hello,

I need some advice here, my GMAT is scheduled for the 2nd of August.
I've taken only a few mocks, Q47 on the Official one, Q48 V34 on the second official (completely cold for verbal, started verbal prep post this).
Q44 V35 on Manhattan Free Mock yesterday. Messed up verbal because the internet went bad and I lost some time and focus.
Q48 V35 on kaplan.

I struggle with timing on quant always and I'm too stubborn to let a question go and move on

I'm in the middle of my Verbal Prep [OG Done, Manhattan to be completed in 6 days tops].

I've been practicing L600 Quant on GMATClub, PS and DS.
I did solve few topics of PS L700 Quant but some of them were quite tough for me [esp. 75%,85% and 95% hard].

But the L600 quant looks too easy. How do I step up my quant game?

I'm targeting a minimum of Q49. My target score is 720.
Shall I work towards 700 level quant on GMAT, now?
On the manhattan test, I hardly got like 3 600 quant incorrect.

Hey GMATinsight,

Thanks for your response!
I'm pretty confident with my verbal tbh, although the scores speak otherwise.
I'll be taking a full Official mock in 5 days from now and will come back with my scores :)
I completed the OG and did very well on SC and RCs.

I'm pretty sure I'll cross the 36 mark. I've taken the GRE in the past and scored Q165,V158.

But I agree that v40 seems far.
I'm trying to get to Q49 V39 on my mocks, [Official Ones]

Hi Karan911,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function - and that you took your CATs in a realistic fashion that matches-up with how you will take the Official GMAT - your various CAT score results show that you essentially performed the same each time (right around a 670 +/- a few points). You handle certain aspects of the GMAT consistently well, but your way of approaching the Exam leaves you open to making certain types of mistakes. Hitting a 720 by early August is an achievable Goal, but you will have to make some fundamental changes to how you 'see' (and respond to) BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections before you will be able to consistently score at that higher level.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,

I want to add here that due to my network I lost exactly 2.5 to 3 minutes, and could go only till q34 on manhattan. So i guess we see 36 questions, right? I couldn't get to those and my penalty was for not attempting. Also as per the ESR, I got NONE of the 600-700 questions wrong on the verbal part [ got a few 700s right], so would that mean I can probably add like a point or 2 here? That along with my Q48 at Official mock puts me at a 690.

Am I being too generous with myself here?

Hi Karan911,

To improve your quant score to a higher level you have to go through GMAT quant carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills. The overall process will be to learn all about how to answer question types with which you currently aren't very comfortable and do dozens of practice questions category by category, basically driving up your score point by point.

For example, if you find that you are not strong in answering Number Properties questions, then carefully review the conceptual underpinnings of how to answer Number Properties questions and practice by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. When you are working on learning to answer questions of a particular type, start off taking your time, and then seek to speed up as you get more comfortable answering questions of that type. As you do such practice, do a thorough analysis of each question that you don't get right. If you got a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question? By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to efficiently fix your weaknesses and in turn improve your GMAT quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant topics.

Each time you strengthen your understanding of a topic and your skill in answering questions of a particular type, you increase your odds of hitting your score goal. You know that there are types of questions that you are happy to see and types that you would rather not see, and types of questions that you take a long time to answer correctly. Learn to more effectively answer the types of questions that you would rather not see, and make them into your favorite types. Learn to correctly answer in two minutes or less questions that you currently take five minutes to answer. By finding, say, a dozen weaker quant areas and turning them into strong areas, you will make great progress toward hitting your quant score goal. If a dozen areas turn out not to be enough, strengthen some more areas.

So, work on accuracy and generally finding correct answers, work on specific weaker areas one by one to make them strong areas, and when you take a practice GMAT or the real thing, take all the time per question available to do your absolute best to get right answers consistently. The GMAT is essentially a game of seeing how many right answers you can get in the time allotted. Approach the test with that conception in mind, and focus intently on the question in front of you with one goal in mind: getting a CORRECT answer.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant materials, so take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant courses.

Hi Karan911,

To start, since you are interested in some competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

If you did not answer the last couple of Verbal questions on this CAT, then the penalty almost certainly did drop your Verbal Scaled Score for that section (and simply answering those questions - even with wrong answers - probably would have benefitted you).

Many GMATers become too fixated on the 'implied level' of the questions that they're working on - instead of what really matters: defining WHY they're getting questions wrong and becoming more efficient at approaching the overall Exam. It's also worth noting that just because a 3rd party describes a question as "700 level" does not necessarily make it so. At this point, I think that your overall Quant and Verbal knowledge is good, so your focus going forward should be on your 'mechanics' (note-taking, organization, etc.) and Tactics.

1) Are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Rich
