Hi Ver23,

There are a variety of factors that can impact your performance on a CAT/mock, including the type of Exam that you're using, the time of day that you start the Exam, the testing conditions, how well-rested you are, the section-order, whether you've seen any of the questions before, etc. In addition, if you frequently approach questions by 'narrowing the answers down to 2 choices' - and then guessing - then that can potentially lead to a big swing in your performances (since you'll typically get just half of those questions correct, but on a 'good day' or 'bad day' you'll get far more or far fewer correct).

Back in early July of this year, you posted that you were getting lots or RC and CR wrong - so some of the issues that impacted your performance 4.5 months ago might still be keeping you from scoring higher now.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) Did you end up taking the Official GMAT back in July? If you did, then how did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
2) How long have you studied in total? Over the last 3 months, how many hours did you typically study each week?
3) What study materials have you used over the course of ALL of your studies? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used besides the Officail ones?
4) Other than the 5 recent CATs/mocks that you referred to in this thread, on what dates (or approximate dates) did you take any OTHER CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Ver23.

Your score is fluctuating mostly because your verbal section score is fluctuating, and your experience is actually a common one. People's verbal scores often fluctuate a lot.

Typically, the reason why people's verbal scores fluctuate is that their approaches to answering verbal questions aren't reliable. So, their approaches sometimes work and sometimes don't.

This type of thing can also go on in quant, but it's lesson common that it does since how to go about reliably answering quant questions tends to be clear to people.

So, your solution is to keep working on verbal and tighten up your approaches to answering verbal questions. You can get some ideas for doing so from these posts.

The Best GMAT Practice Methods

Thank you so much MartyTargetTestPrep, will run through this and change my approach as advised. :)

Here's a 6-hour student I had who went from a V31 to a V40 (retake) in about 30 days, about the same time frame you're looking to retake as well. They mention a variety of resources and tips you may be able to quickly leverage towards the end. All the best with your attempt. Some quick Verbal tips on the gmatknight blog you may find helpful as well. Perhaps download the idiom list too.

Thanks gmatknight. Appreciate your help.

Back in early July of this year, you posted that you were getting lots or RC and CR wrong - so some of the issues that impacted your performance 4.5 months ago might still be keeping you from scoring higher now.- NOTED ,so after July I started preparing again, with a break in between due to work; from October.

1) Did you end up taking the Official GMAT back in July? If you did, then how did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)? -YEs I took it and froze in between the exam, I scored a 490.
2) How long have you studied in total? Over the last 3 months, how many hours did you typically study each week? I started studying again after my attempt in July , from October, around 35-50 hours. With a break of 10 days again due to family emergency.
3) What study materials have you used over the course of ALL of your studies? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used besides the Officail ones? The current scores are taken on ExpertsGlobal platform Have kept official mocks 1,2(have done earlier) and 5,6 for later, closer to the exam date
4) Other than the 5 recent CATs/mocks that you referred to in this thread, on what dates (or approximate dates) did you take any OTHER CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)? NO other CATs.
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?- R2 for US and R3 for EU and UK.
