Hey guys, looking for advice from members experienced in mba admissions. I recently took the GMAT and scored a 720 (V41, Q48). It’s a good score for me but lurking around forums has me second guessing myself.
I guess it might be helpful to give a bit of context: I come from an immigrant working class family (i.e. not Chinese) in HK. I grew up as a public school kid (even uni), so I had to pick up Chinese and English despite them not being my family’s language. Parents couldn’t afford too much on my schooling since I have a disabled younger brother. I did alright in school, but not necessarily stellar. I worked in the education for 2 years helping kids of my background. Then decided to pivot to financial services to go "corporate". But I started reading up on this "Asian Tax" on gmat scores and wondering if I’ll be lumped into being an overrepresented demo, which would hurt my chances.
I was interested in the M7 since they’re well known and people from those schools end up fast tracking their income potential here. The bottom line is that I just want to go into asset management post mba and make a lot of money to help my family’s situation.
Is the payoff of scoring a 750 vs a 720 going to be worth it or should I focus on other aspects of my application to give myself better odds? I would prefer not to spend unnecessary money on retaking the test if the benefits of a higher score would be negligible past a certain threshold.
(Planning to apply in 2024)
(Sorry for the long message but any advice would be amazing)
