I am just struggling to pick up what strategy to use and what approach to take on certain problems. Once I know the approach/strategy to take then the problem comes easy to me. any advice?? Thank you in advance
What's your definition of "approach/strategy" and where are you in terms of your score (have you taken a good test yet)? Normally focusing on strategy is good for people who are doing well and want to do better. Otherwise, at least in my experience, it's the fundamentals that we need to work through.

Hi ross14,

It sounds like you've put in some study time already. Before I can offer the specific advice that you're looking for, I'd like to know a bit more about the work that you've done so far and your goals:

1) How long have you studied?
2) Besides the Course you mentioned, have you used any other materials?
3) How have you scored on your practice CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
4) Have you taken the Official GMAT? If so, then how did you score?
5) What is your goal score?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi everyone,

I am new to this community (my first post, but I have browsed the site for a little bit). I was hoping to get a few questions answered by some veterans. I took an online prep course (I don't want to mention which one), but I honestly feel like it just did not help me a lot. I graduated from a (Big 12 athletic conference institution) with a 3.7 gpa so I do feel like i am fully capable of learning the GMAT material. I am just struggling to pick up what strategy to use and what approach to take on certain problems. Once I know the approach/strategy to take then the problem comes easy to me. any advice?? Thank you in advance

Welcome to GMAT CLUB ross14

I believe the best way forward for you is to first understand GMAT as best as you can. For this you should start with a mock GMAT test which you can either take from Official Guide or you may consider taking any FREE Mock CAT (Link of all free GMAT CAT is in my signature)

Understand first what is your strength and what is your weakness.

Work on Weaknesses and strengthen you strong areas.

Plan the test date well in advance (Don't book it). Keep a target of about 3 months and maximum 4 months. Do study everyday about 2 hours regularly. Practice both Quant and verbal Simultaneously

Do practice questions from GMAT CLUB FORUMS and keep learning fro various approaches that experts mention in their explanations/solutions.

Do choose a disciplined way of studies and since you have already taken an Online course so make sure that it has everything that you need and GMAT will test you on.

I hope this helps!

thank you everyone for the reply. I have not taken a true test yet. What I mean is that I believe I understand the fundamental of solving a problem when I am told how it is done. However, if I were to see a different problem with the same concept I wouldn't know to use that concept.

I think it's a very common problem that GMAT aspirants face who tend to do self preparation.

You just try to understand the language and relate the concept used in it. The question may be asked in various forms but understanding the given information and the question asked will help you identify what property or methods relates the given information and asked question.
