Congratulations on your admits!

Some feel that stern and Fuqua are peer schools and I think that’s fairly accurate but in case of finance, and you were background, being in New York make sense in going to stern makes sense.

There are definitely differences more than just the location. Team Fuqua is a pretty big component of the program that’s not just a name. I can also see stern do you have a number of people from the city and somewhat segmented as the result. It will definitely be a very different experience for you moving and relocating but I don’t think it makes a lot of sense especially during this crazy year.

I would be strongly leaning stern unless I’m missing something. Duke has a nice name and sports but that does not have a strong pass through effect on the bschool.

Congrats!

I agree, even as a Fuqua student. It would be tough to fight for a finance role in New York coming out of Fuqua going up against graduates from Columbia and Stern. This one, in my opinion, is a no-brainer for Stern.

I will also add that Stern and Fuqua really are peer schools to some degree. Where they differ is their placements. It would be hard for Stern graduates to compete against Fuqua graduates in the South in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. I'm generally concerned about the prestige factor. I think your last point touches on it. Duke is historically a perennial T-10 National University, whereas NYU floats around 25 or so. Obviously this is a completely different story for their respective MBA programs (Duke 12 vs NYU 10). Not sure if I'm overthinking / thinking about this incorrectly, but that's where my hesitation primarily lies.

Thanks for the reply. I'm generally concerned about the prestige factor. I think your last point touches on it. Duke is historically a perennial T-10 National University, whereas NYU floats around 30 or so. Obviously this is a completely different story for their respective MBA programs (Duke 12 vs NYU 10). I would say you are thinking about this incorrectly. When choosing a business school, you should choose based on where you want to be in a few criteria (in no particular order):

1) What location do you want to work post-MBA?
2) Which school did you “vibe” with more?
3) Which school has strong placements in your area of interest?
4) Where do you feel best living for 2 years of your life?

This is just a few but you’ll notice, not one should be Which school is the highest ranking national university according to US News. Use the rankings to help identify schools but then use your experiences and post-MBA goals to make the final decision.

All fair points. Based on your methodology, I'd absolutely lean toward Stern too. I guess this is sort of a personal thing at the end of the day, but hear me out. In finance, you have a mix of people with and without MBAs who are all in similar roles. This is why I was taking both lists into account. On the other hand, if you want to become a lawyer then you need a law degree, so you would obviously only consider law school rankings. Not that rankings matter at all, but just trying to spell out where my concern stems from.

Hi there,
As someone that has worked in finance most of my life and went through the MBA journey, I'd say Stern might be a better fit for you.

Given your criteria:

Prestige: They are in the same league in general. Stern wins given it's in NYC.

Job placement (finance): Here's where the bifurcation begins, Stern is known for finance and is in NYC. I'm not saying Fuqua is not good for finance, but you need to consider that depending on what type of job in finance you are looking for, being in NYC is a huge advantage. For instance, if you were to do IB, then you need to be in the NYC offices every week. This happens for networking reasons for schools that are nearby (Stern, Columbia, Wharton, yale, and sometimes the Boston schools). Finally, you can intern while at Stern. I know the MBA can be seen as a chill time for most people, but sometimes, internships can open doors that are impossible to reach otherwise. Obviously, you'll have an easier time making those connections in NYC than in NC.

Overall satisfaction (during/after): As mentioned above, Team Fuqua is a huge component. The school tries hard to get students to mingle (e.g. on Wednesday drinks are on the school). Stern is fragmented given the school size, FT vs PT students, and the many distractions of NYC. If you wanted a community feeling out of your MBA, I'd go for Fuqua even though I would consider how the transition to in-person will be given covid.

Alumni: Both are great schools. I think you won't go wrong either way. There will always be more finance connections in NYC at Stern, but Fuqua also has a big presence although not concentrated in NYC.
