On a certain bus, one-fourth of the children are boys that are wearing sneakers. One-third of the children on the bus are girls that are wearing sneakers, which of the following is a possible number of children on the bus?

A. 11
B. 16
C. 29
D. 30
E. 36

IMO E
let the number of children on the bus be x
One-fourth of the children are boys that are wearing sneakers= x/4
One-third of the children on the bus are girls that are wearing sneakers= x/3
Total number of children wearing sneakers= 7x/12
Therefore the required answer should be a multiple of 12
only E is multiple of 12.

A. 11
B. 16
C. 29
D. 30
E. 36

We can let the total children = c.

Since one-fourth of the children are boys that are wearing sneakers and one-third of the children on the bus are girls that are wearing sneakers, we can say the following:

(1/4)c = number of boys wearing sneakers

(1/3)c = number of girls wearing sneakers

Using the information above, we see that c must be divisible by 3 and 4 and thus by 12. Looking at our answer choices, the only one that is a multiple of 12 is 36.

Answer: E

In this case always think about the possible LCM of the denominator of the fraction.
the number of boys here is 1/4
the number of girls is 1/3
so the LCM of 4 and 3 is 12
now we should find the number from the options that is divided by 12.
Here only 36 is divisible by 12 so
Option E is correct answer.

A. 11
B. 16
C. 29
D. 30
E. 36

Let the total number of children be 12 ( LCM from hihglighted parts )

Thus, the possible number of children on the bus must be a multiple of 12.

Check the options except (E) 36 , none is a multiple of 12....

Hence, the correct answer must be (E) 12
