Let's begin with an n by n square
We can divide the squares lying along the boundary of the game board into 4 groups of n-1 squares.
So, the total number of squares lying along the boundary of the gameboard = k = 4(n - 1)
Since k must be a multiple of 4, the correct answer must be E (since that's the only answer choice that's divisible by 4)
Answer: E

We can do this with imagination, if we select n as 14, (took me good 1 minute to come to this) we can see that there will be 52 squares, considering 14*2 for two sides and 12*2 for the other side (2 already being counted before).
