On the 25th of November in 1990, John was trying to make a new plan for Jan 1991. However, he did not have a new calendar that included Jan 1991. Then, in order to match a new plan for Jan 1991, which of following months of 1990 should he look at?

A. March B. April C. May D. June E. July

Can someone explain how to solve this in easy approach!

You need to find the month which will replicate the month of Jan 1991. This will happen when the number of days between the 1st of that month and 1st Jan are a multiple of 7.
Each month has at least 28 days which is a multiple of 7.
Start from July (option (E)) - July has 3 additional days. August has 3. Sep has 2. Oct has 3. Nov has 2. Dec has 3.
3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 16
June has 2 additional days so 16+2 = 18
May has 3 additional days so 18+3 = 21

Starting from May 1, the number of days is a multiple of 7 till Jan 1991 so Jan calendar will mirror the May calendar.

Answer (C)

Hi
this question needs one knows about numbers of the months in each month, which is not ordinary for internationals!
is it possible we see such question in real GMAT?

You mean that do we need to know the number of days in each month? Yes, it is expected of us to know. The digital world all across follows the same calendar and considering that it is an online exam, knowledge of this calendar is pretty basic.

KarishmaB - Is my method correct
I thought like this - to count extra days above 28

Jan 1990 - 3 extra
Feb - 0
March - 3
April - 2
total = 8 - which is 7+1 exactly what Jan 1991 will be. 1 day ahead of Jan 1990 and that's why May will be the Answer?

The months in between the desired month of 1990 and Jan 1991 should add up to complete weeks. So we need to see the extra days of June to December instead.
Check the solution above. Jan 1990 may not be the reference for Jan 1991.

Let.....jan 1991 started with sunday .... and...... jan has = 31 = [ 4 × 7 ] + 3 days.......so jan will end with 3rd day after sunday.... which is tuesday.....
So....we gotta look for a month in 1990 that has 31 days....and ends with tuesday.......
So...lets get to it......

[ Month ] ----------- [ start ] ------------- [ days ] ------------------------ [ end ]
[ Jan 1991 ] -------- [ sunday ] --------- [ 28 + 3 = 31 ] ---------[ 3rd day after sunday = tuesday ]

So.....from dec 1991..... we'll go backwards......

[ Month ] ------------ [ end ] ---------------- [ days ] -------------------------- [ start ]
[ Dec 1990 ] -------- [ saturday ] ----------- [ 28 + 3 = 31 ] --------[ 3 - 1 = 2 days before saturday = thursday ]
[ Nov 1990 ] ------- [ wednesday ] ---------- [ 28 + 2 = 30 ] --------[ 2 - 1 = 1 days before wednesday = tuesday ]
[ Oct 1990 ] -------- [ monday ] ------------ [ 28 + 3 = 31 ] --------[ 3 - 1 = 2 days before monday = saturday ]
[ Sept 1990 ] -------- [ friday ] ------------- [ 28 + 2 = 30 ] --------[ 2 - 1 = 1 days before friday = thursday ]
[ Aug 1990 ] ------- [ wednesday ] ---------- [ 28 + 3 = 31 ] --------[ 3 - 1 = 2 days before wednesday = monday ]
[ Jul 1990 ] --------- [ sunday ] ------------- [ 28 + 3 = 31 ] --------[ 3 - 1 = 2 days before sunday = friday ]
[ Jun 1990 ] -------- [ thursday ] ----------- [ 28 + 2 = 30 ] --------[ 2 - 1 = 1 days before thursday = wednesday ]
[ May 1990 ] -------- [ tuesday ] ------------- [ 28 + 3 = 31 ] --------[ 3 - 1 = 2 days before tuesday = sunday ]

So.....may 1990 got 31 days .... and ends with tuesday..... so ... John gotta look into may 1990 .....

! nah id win!
