On their way from their nest to a food source, ants of most species leave a trail of chemicals called pheromones. The ants use the scent of the pheromones to guide themselves between the food and their nest. All pheromones evaporate without a trace almost immediately when temperatures rise above 45 degrees Celsius (113 degree Fahrenheit), as is typical during afternoons in places such as the Sahara Desert.

The statements above, if true, most strongly support which one of the following?
We need to find a conclusion.

(A) Most ants forage for food either only in the morning or only during the night.
Cannot be concluded. No statements lead to this conclusion. (Thinking morning, night temperature would be low - not necessarily. Right?)

(B) Most ants that do not use pheromones to mark the paths they take between their nest and food live in the Sahara Desert.
"Most" ants that do not use pheromones to mark the paths they take between their nest and food live in the Sahara Desert. Is it necessary? No right. There might be other places where the temperatures are high.

(C) If any ants live in the Sahara Desert and forage for food at no time but in the afternoon, those ants generally do not use pheromones to guide themselves between food and their nest.
The statement in passage says "All pheromones evaporate without a trace almost immediately when temperatures rise above 45 degrees Celsius " so which means there cannot be any pheromones that can stay if the temperature is 45+, so they must not be using it.
So true, it can be concluded

(D) If any ants do not use pheromones to navigate between food and their nest, those ants use a different substance that does not evaporate in temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.
Too broad. If "any" ants that do not use pheromones to navigate between food and their nest, "those ants use a different substance" (nothing from the statement would make us believe that) that does not evaporate in temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.

C choice is more specific and relates to information in passage ("If any ants live in the Sahara Desert") while D is broad "If any ants that do not use pheromones to navigate between food and their nest".

(E) If any Saharan ants forage for food in the afternoon, those ants forage for food less efficiently when temperatures are above 45 degrees Celsius than they do when temperatures are lower.
Efficiency of foraging food has never been mentioned in the question stem.

Hi experts url=[https://gmatclub.com:443/forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&un=GMATNinja]GMATNinja url=[https://gmatclub.com:443/forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&un=MartyMurray]MartyMurray url=[https://gmatclub.com:443/forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&un=KarishmaB]KarishmaB

I spent good amount of time to finally decide option C and E so wanted to check if my reasoning for option E is correct below?

Option E is wrong as the argument says that ants use pheromones but there can be other effective ways as well apart from pheromones to guide themselves between food and nest (for temperature greater than 45 degree celsius) which we don't know, hence, we can't comment that ants' efficiency will be lower as mentioned in option E. We have to make certain assumptions to make (E) as correct choice.
Yep! The pheromone trail has nothing to do with how efficiently they locate the food. They just won't be able to find their way home without it. (Which sounds like the plot of a Pixar movie.)

Because the pheromone trail isn’t connected to finding the food, (E) is irrelevant.
