One of the popular yet difficult subjects within the study of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages is the figure of the historical King Arthur. The Arthur commonly regarded today as the intrepid leader of the Knights of the Round Table—and as the basis for one of the most famous cycles in European literature—arises from an uneasy mix of history and legend, a mix about which countless scholars have theorized and debated. Much of what is posited about Arthur’s true existence lies in his connection to other, more factually based events, such as the Battle of Badon Hill. This event, which legend hails as Arthur’s great victory over the Saxon invaders, is historically proven to have been a real battle between the Britons and Saxons in the late fifth or early sixth century. The actual leader of the victorious Britons is, however, uncertain. Literary references to Arthur’s role in Baden Hill do not appear until several centuries after the battle (and references to him as “king” appear even later), and the reliability of these accounts is highly suspect.
In recent years, many other facets of the Arthurian legend have been either debunked entirely or proven to be borrowed from the deeds of other figures. Nevertheless, there are small pieces of historical evidence that point to a popular leader named Arthur who ruled around the turn of the sixth century; the connection of this shadowy figure to the Arthur of legend, however, remains tenuous at best.

Choice (C) is an extreme choice, as only a portion of the Arthur legend can be traced back to other historical figures. Choice (B), however, accurately reflects the ambivalence with which the author addresses the subject and is the correct answer.
