Hi everyone,

I was reviewing the application details for Oxford since the round 1 deadline is quickly approaching. I was curious how the "reference form" worked. I get the impression that there will be something similar to a "referral interview", asking several questions, as opposed to a traditional reference letter. Will my references be required to do more than create a reference letter?

Since I'll be applying to several schools, I'm just curious how much work my references will be required to do during the entire applications process.

Thanks!

Hi Solarus,

Are you talking about the recommendation letters? If yes, in that case, for Said Business School, it should be pretty straight forward. If I can remember correctly, the applicant has to provide details of two references (preferably one supervisor and one peer), following which each of the references receive an email with a link to provide the recommendations. My manager who recommended me last year told me that the form consisted of few very basic questions, and a link to upload a letter with additional comments (or a reference letter in simple words). It is highly recommended that your references each provide a letter (min 500 words) explaining why they think that you should be pursuing your MBA from Said Business School. The letter has no specific format. It just needs to be uploaded by the respective people referring you.

As opposed to this, I believe, Cambridge Judge Business School has a very specific set of questions and skill sets on which your references have to grade you and provide justification for the grades given.

I hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to drop me a message should you have any additional questions.
Good Luck!

Thank you!

That is very informative and the exact answer I was looking for. In fact, you also mentioned Cambridge, which is another target school for me, so you've killed 2 birds with one stone!

This is useful to know, since the more information that I can give to my references, the less surprises I have to worry about (already have 2 lined up, one of which is my current supervisor and the other being a project manager from a previous job).

Speaking of Cambridge, I read the application requirements on their website and it seems like they only require a single reference. Is that correct?

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Solarus,

Again, if I can rely on my memory, I believe Cambridge requires two references as well. Thinking back now, I remember both my manager and my colleague (who happened to be my references) mentioning that the recommendation letter for Cambridge was a lot of work. One advice that I can give you is to setup a meeting/Skype call with your references to give them an overview of why you're choosing that particular school for pursuing business studies, and why you feel that you make a good fit. After the call/meeting document your conversation and send it to your references so that they have some basic information on which they can build the recommendation letters. In my case this helped tremendously as it reduced a bulk load of work for my references who already had very busy lives.

I hope this helps, and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any more questions. Glad that I can be of help.
Good Luck!

rcab. Great info. Solarus: any info from your side? Did you submit your applications? How was the feedback from your references?
