How do you stand out?
That is the question. Everyone is going to be near the average GMAT score, have great work experience, and have awesome extracurricular. So now what do you do? Just wait and hope admission chooses your profile over someone else's similar profile?
Most of the time, people study their ass off for the GMAT, work extra hard at the job for those shiny letters of recs, and do amazing extracurricular activities for the application, and then they just submit the application and sit back and wait for admissions to decide their fate.
Then they are disappointed when they don't get accepted. They spent the past 1-2 years working towards this moment. There is a small, but impactful activity that they can do to increase their odds at getting accepted with average stats like everyone else.
Get student recommendations! Wait? You are saying that current students in the class can recommend me to admissions and that will help my application? YES.
4 students told me that they referred me to admissions back when I applied. I did not even know that was possible and most people have 0 clues about that. I spoke to 16 students from the current class.
This is a key piece of the application that people don't even think about. A student referral goes a long way. It shows admissions that you will fit culturally at the school, you are committed because you are reaching out, and you are interesting enough for them to take the time to refer you.
The more times they see your name pop up, the less likely they'll glance over your application. Having a couple of extra looks at your application when you are "considered" average might be what gets you admitted.
