Hey Emmit,
I'm a current first year student at Owen and am concentrating in finance and strategy with an emphasis in real estate. I previously worked for one of the largest commercial real estate developers in the nation and plan on returning to development after graduating. I'll be honest with you - there aren't too many students in my class and Owen in general who are pursuing a career in real estate; this is both a good and bad thing. It's bad in the sense that real estate firms will not come to campus to recruit (I believe this only happens at a few schools...HBS, Stanford, Wharton, UCLA, UNC and UT). However, keep in mind that there are also more students focused on real estate at those schools who will be competing for only a few positions. Being one of only a few students pursuing a CRE career at Owen is great because you have priority access to any and all local Nashville internships. There are a few local developers who are already looking to hire an intern either during the school year and/or for the summer, and they can't find enough candidates!
A CRE veteran developer named Marty Heflin is the director of the real estate program and is a very smart and friendly guy. Google him and you'll see he has a very impressive track record. The Capstone Project is done during the second year and I believe it lasts two mods (one semester) but I could be mistaken.
Be mindful of where you would like to begin your CRE career after you graduate when considering schools. There are many Owen CRE alumni in Nashville, Atlanta and Dallas, but it doesn't expand much further than that. I'm looking to return to California or Texas after graduation, so finding an internship and full-time job is primarily on my shoulders. As you probably know, real estate is all about relationships, so I'm busy keeping in touch with current ones as well as making new ones.
Feel free to reach out directly to me if you have any additional questions.
