Hi everyone,
I have been lurking on the forums for a while and I need some direction.
I've studied for about two months. First cold gmat practice test I got a 530 (Q29, V33) on the first GMAC practice test
After studying for 3 weeks just doing problems out of the OG I got a 650 (Q42, V37) under test conditions on the second test
I was pretty stoked to see such improvement so fast.
After that I got the 7th edition MGMAT quant and verbal books.
Unfortunately my scores went on a steep decline over the next 6 weeks using the manhattan CATs.
620 (Q41, V34)
590 (Q39, V32)
560 ((Q38, V29)

All I can think of is that I am not doing enough problems to stay sharp and that I am not actually understanding the concepts from the MGMAT books.
I am considering buying the genius package from axamPAL to get the tutoring, videos, and examinations of my performance. But I thought I would run it by you guys before I blew some money, what do you guys think?
Thanks in advance

Comparing Manhattan CAT's score with GMATPrep mock is not a good idea. Manhattan CAT is a bit harder than GMATPrep mock. At the end of the day, you're going to take GMAC's test, so you may stick with GMATPrep's mock.

Do you wanna buy any package for only quant or verbal? or both?
I've no idea about "ExamPal's on-demand product", but i found Quantam GMAT (math), TTP (quant); Mathrevolution (quant), EmpowerGMAT (both quant and verbal), IVY GMAT (for RC) very helpful. You can have a look them. I can give you more idea about various company's product, but it totally depends on your budget and the section (either quant or verbal) you wish to buy. Thanks_

Hey shrinks101 it does not necessarily mean that you are not working hard enough at the GMAT. It may as well mean that you're working too much and are taking a lot of stress in the doing.

Relax for a bit and maybe try a test again.

The more you stress, the lower the score is going to go.

Hi shrinks101,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. First off, the variation in your practice test scores indicate that you likely have numerous weak areas in both quant and verbal that are holding you back from improving your GMAT score. I don’t necessarily think the issue is that you are not doing enough practice problems but rather than you have some knowledge gaps that must be addressed. Thus, moving forward you may consider following a linear and structured study plan that allows you to learn each GMAT quant and verbal topic individually and then practice each topic until you’ve gained mastery. By studying in such a way, you can ensure that you methodically improve your GMAT quant and verbal skills and ensure that no stone is left unturned. Certainly, if you want more detailed advice on how to improve your quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach out.

Hi shrinks101,

To start, the scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC, but the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion). Many GMATers find the MGMAT CATs to be a little tougher than the Official Exam, so the slight decrease in your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores on those MGMAT CATs is not necessarily a bad thing. Assuming that you took all of your CATs in a realistic fashion, your current 'ability level' is likely in the low-600s.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What is your overall goal score?
3) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
