Veritas Prep - Book 2 - page 209

61. If x is y percent of z, is y greater than 100?

1) z/x = 0.8
2) x decreased by 20% is equal to z

A B C D E : Data Sufficency

Solution:

We are given that x is y percent of z, therefore x, y, and z are related via x = z * (y/100) or, equivalently, y = 100x/z.

Statement One Alone:

z/x = 0.8

Let’s substitute z = 0.8x:

y = 100x/0.8x = 100/0.8 = 125

Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

x decreased by 20% is equal to z

This statement translates to 0.8x = z. Proceeding as above, we can again obtain that y = 125.

Statement two alone is sufficient.

Answer: D
