Error:
1. This sentence gives us general information about hibwrnating. It should be in simple present.
2. In the non-underlined portion, we can see the use of 'their',which indicates the sub must be plural 'hedgehogs'

POE:
Option A is incorrect for the stated reasons.

A. between three and six months, a hedgehog could hibernate so Incorrect

The reasons are stated above

B. between three and six months, hedgehogs can hibernate as Correct

C. between three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate as Incorrect

'between...to' is incorrect. The correct idiom is 'between...and'

D. from three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate so Incorrect

'hedgehogs could' should be in simple present form 'hedgehogs can'

E. from three to six months, a hedgehog can hibernate so Incorrect

'a hedgehog' is not correct antecedent of 'their'

Official Explanation

Hibernating during late fall and winter, moving their nesting site once before returning to torpor that lasts between three and six months, a hedgehog could hibernate so long as seven months.

A. between three and six months, a hedgehog could hibernate so

B. between three and six months, hedgehogs can hibernate as

C. between three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate as

D. from three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate so

E. from three to six months, a hedgehog can hibernate so

This question addresses pronoun-antecedent agreement. In this case, “their” is not in the underlined portion of the text, so we know that the antecedent “hedgehogs” need to be in the plural form to agree. Let’s see how each option handles this, and eliminate any that use a singular antecedent:

A. between three and six months, a hedgehog could hibernate so

B. between three and six months, hedgehogs can hibernate as

C. between three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate as

D. from three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate so

E. from three to six months, a hedgehog can hibernate so

We can eliminate options A & E because the singular antecedent “a hedgehog” doesn’t agree with the plural pronoun “their.”

Idioms are another issue. “Between A and B” is the correct way to word the phrase. The other idiom, “as long as,” is correct with “as” and incorrect with “so.” Differences within the text are highlighted.

B. between three and six months, hedgehogs can hibernate as
This is CORRECT. The idioms are used correctly in the sentence. “Between three and six months,” and “can hibernate as long as.”

C. between three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate as
This is INCORRECT. Right away, we can see that the idiom that should be “between A and B” is used incorrectly.

D. from three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate so
This is INCORRECT. Right away, we can see that the idiom that should be “between A and B” is used incorrectly.

There you have it - option B is our correct choice!

Hibernating during late fall and winter, moving their nesting site once before returning to torpor that lasts between three and six months, a hedgehog could hibernate so long as seven months.

Split #1: the use of their in the second modifying clause suggests that doer of the action (the hedgehogs) will be plural. Eliminate A and E.

A. between three and six months, a hedgehog could hibernate so

E. from three to six months, a hedgehog can hibernate so

Split #2 the correct usage of between

B. between three and six months, hedgehogs can hibernate as

The tense is appropriate since it aligns with the rest of the sentence. Plural hedgehogs is also correct. This our answer :D

Between X and Y is the idiomatically correct form. It clearly conveys a range/duration of time.

C. between three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate as

The meaning is botched completely in this sentence. We don't need to use the hypothetical here as we're stating concrete facts.

Between is not used correctly.

D. from three to six months, hedgehogs could hibernate so

Altered meaning.
