Hello,
I need some help - when do we use past perfect and when do we use past perfect progressive? What is the difference between the two?
From what I know, past perfect progressive refers to an action in the past that continued till some time and was then interrupted by another event, which is also in the past
Past progressive refers to a continuous action that occurred in the past and then interrupted by another event, also in the past
Both of them sounds awfully similar to me. Is there a difference between the two that I'm missing?
I was cooking when the phone rang
I had been cooking when the phone rang
Both sentences mean the same? Are there subtle differences that I'm missing here?
In general, when do we prefer one over the other?
Thanks for helping me here
