Hi,
I am an Indian and need some urgent advise,I have 2 offers of MBA currently.1 from top ranked Bschool in India and 2 from top 20 MBA school from USA .After finishing my MBA I would like to go for a PHD in business.So wanted some experienced people in this forum to advise me .For doing a PHD later is it better to travel to US(preferably in a top tire college).Also after MBA at US college is it possible to work and attend PHD classes in weekends.If that is possible then there is a safe cution of not having to leave a job for the sake of PHD,I don't have much knowledge on this subject.Hence please advise.

Thanks and regards,
Siddharth

Getting a PhD or MBA degree should not be your goal, rather these degrees should align to your career goals concerning your job preferences, both location and sector.

PhD from reputed U.S. school are definitely considered better than PhD from any top Indian School. Also, PhD from U.S. school (mostly) do not have Masters degrees as prerequisite. So if you want to do Research / to be a professor (India or abroad) U.S. is the only option. PhD would take 4-6 years, and if you get into top universities you will get stipend as well. U.S. schools do not allow job during PhD, as they require full focus on coursework (anyway you will be getting stipend).

MBA from IIMs in India are good as well, If you do not have any career goals(other than getting a good package) now and just want to go with the flow. I personally feel that people in IIMs are unnecessarily competitive, running after CGPA rather than knowledge. The funny thing is in interviews they will ask hell lot of questions, and your chances of getting in is proportional to the effectiveness of your lying. :)

Hi siddhartha;

Its very commendable that you want to go for PHD in top B school in USA. But i make you one thing clear, the B school PhD programme is full time and very rigorous. No external jobs are allowed. You may get a teaching assistant ship at the university level.

Thanks

Most PhD programs don't care if you have done an MBA and some might see it as a negative signal since it is so industry-oriented. (A masters in econ, finance, stats, OR, or something else is seen as a much stronger signal.)

Also, some PhD programs offer an MBA as an easy option on the way to a PhD. Some make you do it on the way if they want to be able to kick you out before graduating without them feeling guilty. (I know of one program where them asking you to do the MBA on the way is a sign you are in trouble.)

Very true. There is no way you can work an outside job and do a PhD; and, even if you could, the political damage of not being around most of the time would be fatal. To pass quals, you need to do well AND at least one faculty member has to want to do research with you. If you are rarely around, none of them will know you well enough to gamble on doing research with you.

Best of luck; I hope things work out well!
