Phillip has twice as many tropical fish as Jody. If Phillip gave Jody 10 of his tropical fish, he would have half as many as Jody. How many tropical fish do Phillip and Jody have together?

A. 10

B. 20

C. 30

D. 40

E. 60

Tropical Fish (TP) = 2* Jody (J)

TP - 10 = (1/2)(J+10)

i.e. 2J - 10 = J/2 + 5

i.e. J = 10

and TP = 20

i.e. Total = 20+10 = 30

Answer: Option C

A. 10

B. 20

C. 30

D. 40

E. 60

p = 2j

According to the question:

p - 10 = (j + 10) 1/2

2 ( 2j - 10) = j + 10

4j - 20 = j + 10

3j = 30

j = 10.

2j = 2*10 = 20

Total : j + p = j + 2j = 10 + 20 = 30.

C is the correct answer.

given
p=2j
p-10=j+10/2
so
2j-10=j+10/2
j=10
p=20
p+j= 30

Plug in numbers for this question. Take 30, if Philip gave Jody 10 Philip would have 10 and Jody would have 20. So it fits.

We can let j = the number of fish that Jody has and so 2j = the number of fish that Philip has. After Philip gives Jody 10 fish, she has (j + 10) fish, and Philip has (2j - 10) fish; thus:

2j - 10 = 1/2(j + 10)

4j - 20 = j + 10

3j = 30

j = 10

So Phillip has 20 tropical fish and Jody has 10, and together they have 30 fish.

Answer: C
