1. “The common notion that workers are generally apathetic about management issues is false, or at least outdated: a recently published survey indicates that 79 percent of the nearly 1,200 workers who responded to survey questionnaires expressed a high level of interest in the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs.”
Discuss how well reasoned... etc.
The argument concludes that workers are interested in management issue. This conclusion is drawn basis on a survey, conducted on 1200 workers, and indicated that 79% of worker responded to survey questionnaire related to corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs. The argument is not adequate in several aspects.
To begin with, sample size is very small to support the argument. There is no reason to believe that if survey is received well in the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits program, workers would show interest in other management issues. Workers maybe interested in the issues that directly affect them and not interested in other issues i.e. profit, employee turnover, brand value etc.
Further, author should provide information whether survey is mandatory. If survey is mandatory, worker would have responded but with no real interest and their participation is not voluntarily but because of external force.
Overall the argument is weak. The argument can be strengthened if survey is conducted for other management issues that do not directly affect the worker and with substantiated sample size.
2.
“In the first four years that Montoya has served as mayor of the city of San Perdito, the population has decreased and the unemployment rate has increased. Two businesses have closed for each new business that has opened. Under Varro, who served as mayor for four years before Montoya, the unemployment rate decreased and the population increased. Clearly, the residents of San Perdito would be best served if they voted Montoya out of office and reelected Varro.”
The argument concludes that residents of San perdito should vote for Varro instead of Montoya. This is based on the facts 1> Population has decreased and unemployment rate has increased 2> Business, that were closed were double than new business opened in tenure of Mayor Montoya. When Varro served as a mayor, the unemployment rate decreased and population increased.
Argument is weak in many aspects. Author is assuming that there is correlation between economic condition or employment availability and serving mayor. While it could be a factor, there are some other factors also that should be taken into account before concluding that poor economic condition is because of serving mayor. For instance, overall economy condition could be bad and that affects economic condition of all cities including San Perdito.
Further, it assumes that good economic condition was due to serving mayor and not because of nation policy, ruling party or ruling leader. There are various factors that affect unemployment rate such as corporate policy or automation. Now, companies may have developed technologies that reduces man-hour requirement while enhancing efficiency of the overall process. Or companies may have opted for some cost reduction strategies, for instance – outsourcing, increasing work hours etc. that may have leaded to layoff.
Overall, argument is weak and can be strengthened if other factors that generally contribute to employment rate are taken out of the picture. This way, a direct link between serving mayor and employment rate can be established.
