Gmat Focus percentile question - Official vs Mock

Question

Hi Everyone,

Need a bit help on understanding the difference between the percentile and overall score mappings provided by gmac on their official site for GMAT focus edition and the details observed as per the official mock.

Details are highlighted in the image below!

Can someone help me bridge the gap here!  OfficialGMAT  - your response would be highly appreciated!

Good scores. Were you able to complete the Verbal section? 42 percentile for 78 scaled score is very odd. This was test 1 or 2?

Upon checking, i did see that 93 percentile translates to 655 in "  Interpreting Your Percentile Ranking  " which is bit different from the detail shared in "  concordance table  "

Thanks, the scores were of test-2. I did complete my verbal section. I think 78 score for 42nd percentile does match with the details published by gmac for focus sectional scores. Not sure if you felt it a bit low or high.

The score is fine but the percentile is a bit too low. Verbal section of focus edition has become the quant of the classic GMAT. If the scaled score drops even a wee bit, the drop in percentile is punishing.

Then we must view it in a different perspective right? That too much drastic change in percentile could still impact the score by little. Isn't it?

FYI - you will continue to see slight deviations, variances, and inconsistencies between the scores. This is in big part because the overlap in scoring and percentiles is not exact and far from perfect. The table that was put together is almost impossible to make very precise.

I had to take the "lowest" GMAT focus score you need. However, as you can see in the GMAC's concordance, 655 is both 700 and 710 😱🤯

If you're familiar with the percentile rankings for the current GMAT, you can see that the GMAT Focus rankings are significantly different.

Hi Maheshkv,

I noticed that you're looking at the GMAT Exam to GMAT Focus table. This table is most likely for schools that primarily receive or use GMAT Focus scores. Since you took a GMAT Focus practice test, you want to look at the GMAT Focus to GMAT table. If I remember correctly, it's in the same document.

Thanks I'll try to find the other table you mentioned but ideally shouldn't both be the same? This would create a lot of confusion among students and Bschools too. I honestly don't know how easy is it on B schools how to account for all these minor nuances

Hi Maheshkv, I don't know how the tables were developed, but generally, we shouldn't assume that X -> Y is always perfectly reversible. For example, let's say that someone who gets a perfect score (100%!) on a very, very difficult math test can get a Q51 on the GMAT. Going the other way is more risky though. Should we say that {100% -> Q51} means {Q51 -> 100%}? Even percentiles won't help. It's entirely possible that Q51 test takers wouldn't manage even (say) a 10% on the very, very tough math test. As for your other point, I know that some instructors and admissions professionals are raising major doubts about this. I respect their opinion, but I don't believe that admissions officers at good bschools are basically incompetent dinosaurs.

There have been some changes: On both the GMAT Focus Edition Official Score Report and Practice Exam score report, in addition to your total and section scores and percentile rankings, you’ll get insights by section, question type, and content domain (meaning, a specific area of knowledge, and details on your time management. The major difference is that only on the Official Score Report will you see your performance by program and school, which shows your Total Score percentile ranking compared to the percentile rankings of test takes who sent their GMAT scores to the same program within the past 5 years (this chart will only display if you send your Official Score Report to one or more programs). In both the GMAT focus mocks I have observed that for DI section, the order of the Question Types remains the same. So DS, TP, MSR and other questions have fixed question numbers. Does it mean that in the actual exam as well the same order will be maintained for the question?
What used to happen for IR section of the classic GMAT exam? Will that have any bearing for the focus edition exam?
