New GRE Official Guide, 4th Edition from ETS coming 1/24/25

Question

If you were thinking about buying a paper copy of the Official* Guide to the GRE General Test aka O.G., then you should probably wait a few weeks.

A new, fourth edition will be published on January 24, 2025. It promises 150 new questions, and is updated to reflect the newer, shorter GRE.

Current retail price is $45.

Unfortunately, there's no e-book access code on the inside or outside cover.

ETS has also unveiled a new email address for inquiries regarding the questions in this book (and presumably other official GRE questions as well?):

Bummer. Any indication as to when an e-book might be released? I do think it's odd that their official store hasn't been updated even though the book seems to be available. My copy arrives tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard or seen any news about an e-book—and ETS  has never offered one  took years to offer one for the previous editions, so I wouldn't necessarily expect an official offering anytime soon.

That said, I'm sure a searchable PDF version will eventually be available in the usual locations for such a popular exam: in 2024, the GRE was taken by approximately 250,000 students worldwide.

In comparison, the GMAT was taken by "only" 115,000 students last year.

ETS does offer e-books. Take a look at my screenshot attached; it's from the official ETS website. Their entire book offering is available in either paperback or e-book.

Aha, I see—you are of course correct that ETS did  eventually  make official e-book versions available for the prior editions. That said, it took several years after the books' initial release (the 3rd edition was published in 2016).

Thus, ETS will probably again wait to publish official e-book versions of the new edition(s), due to piracy concerns. As time goes on and sales of the paper book diminish, there is a better chance that an e-book will then also be offered for purchase.

I do not think the ebook will be available soon for the new guide. Many books in 2025 for the GRE have been released in paperback only due to the possibility of sharing online

The ebooks on the ETS website are there for years.

So far I like the book! Better late than never: it has been nearly a decade since the 3rd edition was published in 2016.

As promised, the 4th edition does indeed include (nearly) 150 new questions. The paper is relatively thick, and the guide is nearly 700 pages -- not 800 pages, as it erroneously states in the  Amazon listing .

The 2 paper practice tests are shorter to reflect the new, 54-question, 2-hour, computer-adaptive GRE.

It is also worth noting that ETS has recently released 3rd editions of the Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions and Official Quantitative Practice Questions guides, which include e-book versions.

However, I wouldn't get too excited, as I expect these guides to feature the exact same 300 questions they have featured since the first editions: notice that "Volume 1" on the cover has not changed, and there is zero indication of any new questions in the books' descriptions.
