In flightless birds, such as penguins and ostriches, the primary purpose of feathers is to preserve body heat. The feathers are effective in preserving body heat because birds are exothermic, meaning they produce their own heat. For this reason, evolutionary biologists insist that the recent discovery of fossils of prehistoric raptors, who had similar feathers, is evidence that at least some raptors were exothermic.

In the passage, the author develops the argument by

A) reaching a conclusion about an unknown phenomenon by drawing an analogy between it and a known phenomenon
B) providing a new interpretation of evidence once cited in support of an earlier hypothesis
C) putting together the theory that most completely explains several pieces of evidence that seem to oppose one another
D) theorizing about how the biological processes of today’s organisms may have developed from certain biological processes of their prehistoric ancestors
E) highlighting the differences between the environments of today’s flightless birds and those of prehistoric raptors

Sixty to sixty-five percent of cancer survivors suffered mobility limitations due to the effects of chemotherapy on their musculature. Treatments for preventing mobility limitations through the use of anabolic steroids have improved, but the proportion of cancer survivors who suffer from mobility limitations has increased.

Which of the following, if true, best reconciles the apparent discrepancy described above?

A. When cancer patients successfully complete a chemotherapy treatment, their musculature is unprepared to deal with the stress of performing normal activities.
B. Radiation therapy, a method of chemotherapy, can sometimes damage cancer patients’ musculature, but radiation can now be performed with less damage.
C. Thanks to improved medical technology, cancer patients who previously would have died, now live; however, this technology leaves them with more damaged musculatures than previous technology did, making the cancer survivors more likely to experience mobility issues.
D. The improvement of treatments aimed at preventing mobility loss due to chemotherapy has been gradual, and further investigation is still needed.
E. The mobility limitations caused by chemotherapy can be reduced by carefully controlling the application of chemotherapy drugs and providing physical therapy, but these methods cannot completely prevent the issue.

Most tenants living in apartments do not stay in one location for very long, moving to a new building every few years. However, the Eyre Apartments Housing Complex is well-known for retaining its tenants. Eyre Apartments’ building manager credits this success to the close-knit, cooperative community environment that the company has fostered in its housing complex.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the Eyre Apartments Housing Complex’s explanation of its success in retaining tenants?

A. Some tenants living in apartments move to a new building if they become bored with their current neighborhood.
B. The cost of living in Eyre Apartments is relatively low compared to other housing complexes nearby.
C. Many of Eyre Apartments’ oldest tenants had previously lived in only one other housing complex.
D. In a cooperative community environment, people avoid behaving in a way that might threaten group harmony and thus avoid mentioning to their fellow tenants any dissatisfaction they might have with their accommodations.
E. A non-cooperative community environment hinders the communication between the tenants and the building managers that tenants consider necessary for a comfortable living situation.

The Peregrine Foundation is a private, non-profit leukemia research institute. In the last ten years, the foundation has received an increased amount of donations, and the cost of conducting research has decreased. Yet, the quality of research produced by the foundation has fallen. Meanwhile, the quality of research conducted by most other leukemia-research organizations has risen. Clearly, over the past ten years, The Peregrine Foundation must have become a self-serving and wasteful organization.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion reached in the passage?

A. Many other private, non-profit organizations involved in leukemia research provide financial relief to leukemia patients, in addition to conducting research.
B. Ten years ago, the quality of research produced by The Peregrine Foundation was better than that of other private, non-profit organizations involved in leukemia research.
C. The average salaries of scientists and medical professionals employed by The Peregrine Foundation are slightly higher than those of doctors and scientists employed by other private, non-profit organizations involved in leukemia research.
D. Over the past ten years, the percentage of the donations received by The Peregrine Foundation spent on research has risen, while the percentage spent on the management of the foundation has fallen.
E. Over the past ten years, the increase in the absolute amount of donations received by The Peregrine Foundation has averaged approximately five percent more than the local rate of inflation.
