Hi Guys, Can someone explain the language difference to look out for to understand if it is Simple growth rate or Compound growth rate?
organization ... 85045.html
Like in this question I thought that I have to use compound growth and couldnt solve the question.
Clearly ambiguous. If members are increasing annually at a constant rate, then it should always be a compounding increase. This is the reason why I stick to official Quant questions or Quant questions posted by Bunuel.

What Is the number of moves a chess player can make in the beginning?
8c1+8c1 (Pawns)+4 (Of Knight)

Or the question can be, what is the moves a player can make in their first step

If this question has to be asked in the exam, the candidate must have known the game of chess already and it is never assumed as such. So this is not a type of question to be anticipated for the exam

These type of Irrelevant questions reduce the morale and confidence of people who are genuinely trying to prepare. On a positive note, lets use this forum for constructive preparation and Gmat related discussions only.

It’s still a question of combination, whose logic needs to be known, the logic isn’t out of GMAT’s scope

Each of the 8 pawns have 2 choices and each of the 2 knights have 2 choices each. 8*2 + 2*2 = 20 moves. Definitely, NOT a GMAT Question but I understand the curiosity.

Um, why it’s not 8C2 (For pawns) but 8C1 and 8C1 separately?

But 8C1 + 8C1 makes no sense to me.

Exactly. 8C2 means choosing 2 things out of 8. 8C1 means choosing 1 thing out of 8. We are doing neither.

Apparently 8C1+8C1+4 also adds up to 20

Question: In a group consisting of 12 boys, there are 6 boys two each of whom share the names Sam, Martin, and James. The rest of the 6 boys have 6 different names, other than the names mentioned. Four boys from the group are selected for a party such that the boys with the same names are always together (i. e either all of them go or none of them goes). Find the probability that the boys named Sam go for the party?

Apparently 19 + 1 also adds upto 20. But then it should also make some sense, right? You tell me, what purpose does a 8C1 do here? Out of what 8 things you are choosing 1...and then repeating this process?

8C1 I thought was like, 8 pawns choosing 1 square to move forward
