simply adding with values would give us around 1 only..
yes, it 1. so just simply add the values without combining any of the three fractions... like Common denominator? I guess I over-complicated it

Damian needs a of the wood in the shed on theffirst day and % of the remaining wood on the second day to
make a tree-house in his backyard. Given that 2⁄5 of the wood in the shed is unusable due to fungal damage what fraction of usable wood is left once he has completed the tree-house?

Answer is 11/36

but how?

Damian needs 1/4 of the wood in the shed on the first day and 2/9 of the remaining wood on the second day to make a tree-house in his backyard. Given that 2/ 5 of the wood in the shed is unusable due to fungal damage what fraction of usable wood is left once he has completed the tree-house?

Pure algebra will lead to a time consumption. Let’s take some assumption here.
I see a 1/4, a 2/9, and a 2/5....4*9*5 = 180.

So let’s assume the total amount of wood is 180 kgs.

Wood Damian needs on first day = (1/4) * 180 = 45 kgs
Remaining Wood = 180 - 45 = 135 kgs

Wood Damian needs on second day = (2/9) * 135 = 30 kgs

Total wood used = 45 + 30 = 75 kgs

Unusable wood = (2/5) * 180 = 72 kgs

Total Available Wood = 180 - 72 = 108 kgs
Wood used = 75 kgs
Usable Wood Left = 108 - 75 = 33 kgs

Fraction = 33 / 108 = 3 / 35

shorter method for fractions would be to calculate total wood consumed after 2 days. then from remaining subtract 2/5 of total

LCMs always.....Like the rate-work question above...4 men 11 days.....Just take 44 units or 88 units as work. Life becomes much simpler as fractions cancel out

can someone help me with this question..thx
1.
Just rationalise each fraction.
Denominator of all 3 fractions would come out to be 1.
And the numerators will cancel each other with -1+2=1 remaining in the end.

If you rationalise each of the terms, denominator becomes 1 for all the terms. After that, it is just addition and subtraction
