Commentator: The theory of trade retaliation states that countries closed out of any of another country’s markets should close some of their own markets to the other country in order to pressure the other country to reopen its markets. If every country acted according to this theory, no country would trade with any other.

The commentator’s argument relies on which of the following assumptions?

(A) No country actually acts according to the theory of trade retaliation.

(B) No country should block any of its markets to foreign trade.

(C) Trade disputes should be settled by international tribunal.

(D) For any two countries, at least one has some market closed to the other.

(E) Countries close their markets to foreigners to protect domestic producers.

In this why not A, when we say no country actually acts acc to the theory. so no country actually comes into pressure to reopen and then hence no trade.

D is not conclusive, atleast some markets are closed. that wont lead to "NO TRADE". it would just reduce the trade "maybe".

Rogers Syndrome (RS) is an inflammation of the rotary cuff of the shoulder. Until recently, it was thought that RS was caused by over-rotation of the shoulder joint. Recently; however, tests in mice conducted by a group of researchers revealed a gene that causes RS-like symptoms. The researchers concluded that, therefore, it is likely that RS has a genetic component.

Which of the following, if true, would cast the most doubt on the researchers contention that it is not solely over-rotation of the shoulder joint that causes RS?

(A) The RS-like symptoms in mice abate when treated with a particular combination of drugs.

(B) The mice selected by the researchers have been used in a variety of studies that resulted in meaningful results.

(C) After the mice developed the RS-like symptoms, the researchers only observed them for three weeks.

(D) The researchers in question have been studying RS for only two years.

(E) The symptoms of RS are similar to, if not identical with, the symptoms of one or more other syndromes or conditions.
Is it E ?

but how is A an assumption . how is this required to be assumed to say the last line of the argument. the last stament starts wiith "If". it can may be termed as an inference but it wont be an assumption in my opinion
because negating it will change the answer. if we negate, say countries do act acc to the theory. then the pressure will make them reopen their markets

I think No will be too extreme, also if A is true then author conclusion is weaken so it cannot be our answer

I know, but in assumption question we have fond an answer that will support the conclusion.i.e author must have assumed something while arriving on conclusion. Indirectly we have to make the argument stronger

It might be that if country do not follow the theory, it means that other country will not retaliate and hence no dispute

The number of points a student gets on an exam is directly proportional to the number of multiple-choice questions he or she answers correctly, and also to the square of the number of essay questions he or she answers correctly. What is the score of a student who answers 20 multiple-choice questions correctly and 6 essay questions correctly?

(1) A student who answers 15 multiple-choice questions correctly and 2 essay questions correctly scores 24 points higher than a student who answers 12 multiple-choice questions correctly and 2 essay questions correctly.

(2) A student who answers 15 multiple-choice questions correctly and 3 essay questions correctly scores 20 points higher than a student who answers 5 multiple-choice questions correctly and 5 essay questions correctly.

Seedling growth inhibitors are herbicides that interfere with new plant growth. Plants absorb seedling growth inhibitors from germination until the seedling emerges from the soil, after which point the seedling growth inhibitors can no longer harm the plant. Among the types of seedling growth inhibitor are root inhibitors, which prevent cell division, thereby inhibiting shoot elongation and lateral root formation. Root inhibitors are absorbed through the developing roots and shoots which receive the bulk of the damage to the plant.

Which of the following, if true, would most strongly support the position that it is inadvisable to protect corn crops by using root inhibitors on weeds vulnerable to the herbicide?

A The seedlings of corn plants generally appear above the soil before the shoots of the weeds common in corn crops.

B. Most weeds are susceptible to some type of herbicide.

C. Not all weeds can be eradicated by root inhibitors.

D. The root inhibitors can damage the roots and shoots of plants beneficial to corn plants as well as any unwanted plants.

E. Although botanists have developed root inhibitors in the lab and tested them in the field, there is no major production facility producing them.

Consumer Advocate: Happy Smiles Daycare, a popular child-care facility in Rolling Hills, boasts an average child-to-caregiver ratio of 5:1, a number it cites as the lowest in the county. Furthermore, the daycare claims that compared to some other daycare centers in the county, it does not include helpers, or those who are involved in cleanup and diaper changing, when computing the ratio. Yet Happy Smiles Daycare’s claim that parents with children aged 1–3 will find no other facility with such a low child-to-caregiver ratio is not accurate.

Which of the following, if true, provides the best justification for the Consumer Advocate’s position?

A. Happy Smiles Daycare has two rooms, one for children 1-2 years old and another for those 2-3 years old, both of which have a child to caregiver ratio of 5:1.

B. Kenton School, which has fewer than 100 students and a legitimate child-to-caregiver ratio of 6:1, provides approximately equal-sized classes for each year up to age 6, though the classes for those over 3 have a child-to-caregiver ratio more than double that of the other classes.

C. The number of students enrolled in Happy Smiles Daycare remains relatively fixed throughout the year.

D. Tiny Tots Daycare, which boasts a 4:1 child-to-caregiver ratio, includes any adults who are in a classroom throughout the day.

E. Looming budget cuts indicate that Happy Smiles Daycare may not be able to sustain such a low child-to-caregiver ratio in coming years.
