Hi Everyone,
I am a bit confused on how to properly create a compelling resume for my upcoming application.
Few questions in mind:
1. I have been working in a company for a while and the company is a bit "hard" on job titles, I have got a promotion to a much bigger responsibility and a significant salary raise (35% increase) but my title remained the same as an "Analyst". How do I put this in my resume to show that I actually made a career progression in my current company? I am thinking of asking my management team to change up my title but I don't know if it's a good idea.
2. I co-founded a restaurant in 2019 - like an actual restaurant and it was doing really well in 2019 until the start of 2020. Then Covid pandemic came and we couldn't maintain the rent without customers since everyone is staying at home and not going out. We decided to close it as of May 2020 and I just want to know how should I put this in my resume? I managed a team of 5 full-time employees (1 manager, 2 chefs, and 2 janitor) and 5 part-timers. Basically the part-timers are the waiter/waitresses. We were originally on a very good start in the first 7 months (we expected that we could breakeven the initial investment by the end of 12-months). Is this experience something worth putting on resume?

Your titles are useful but the admissions people know they don't tell the whole story. You can mitigate this by capturing key elements of your work history in each position that highlight both leadership potential and the potential to benefit from that particular school's program. I can help you with more guidance if you DM me and send me your resume.
Your restaurant experience is valuable and demonstrates you are multi dimensional. Many restaurants closed due to Covid and your experience having to make that hard decision is valuable leadership experience that can be highlighted in your application.

(1) Title is really insignificant. Your accomplishments matter. Title often varies from sector to sector, company to company and geography to geography. For example, an "analyst" title at a hedge fund can be held by a fairly seasoned veteran, but also held by a recent college graduate in investment banking. If you are concerned about showing progress, you should make sure your recommenders note your raise and achievements that in their letters. Do not worry about artificially inflating your title and getting into a messy conversation over something somewhat superficial as it relates to the MBA process.
(2) Yes, the experience is completely worth putting on your resume. In fact, I would go so far as to say you might want to include it in your essays. Dealing with adversity can be a virtue in the MBA application process. If handled appropriately, it can reveal character. That you had a business that failed (particularly in a pandemic) is not the point. What matters is how you explain the lessons learned and what that means for your potential as a business professional moving forward.
