Hi J24,

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Talking about your stats, your undergrad GPA is decent. If you score the expected GMAT (750+), it will greatly enhance your chances. Talking about your work experience, you must speak about your startup experience. You should go into more detail about this journey, describing how you built leadership skills in yourself and how you dealt with setbacks. You should include examples of impact, maturity, leadership, and creativity in your apps to demonstrate your success. Bring up your internship experience and the lessons you learned from it.

Your Ecs are good as well! You can speak about your work for NGO and the motivation behind this cause. Speaking about all this with enthusiasm would add diversity to your profile, and adcoms will get to know different aspects of your personality.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have a good profile. I would like to know which programs you are targeting to gauge your fit for the b-school. The most critical aspect of your application is how you link the dots and provide a compelling story to distinguish yourself from the other candidates in the pool. Throughout your application, make sure you align with the school's ideals. You can have a look at the deferred MBA programs here with their deadlines and criteria. It will help you get better clarity of which schools should you apply to.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances for US Schools

Cheers!

To improve your profile you should do the following:

(1) Keep focusing on grades. Try to raise your GPA as much as possible. That is a huge determinant for deferred MBA programs. Is the 3.52 close to a US equivalent? If so, that's good just not great.

(2) Crush the GMAT. That's a major X factor that is not part of your profile. You have to do well. You arguably have more control over this component than you do GPA which is harder to improve.

(3) Refine your career goals. "Consulting" is not going to help you stand out. Think about something more personal and interesting.

You have solid achievements and extracurricular activities. Work experience for deferred MBA programs is not as big of a deal compared to full-time MBAs since it's usually part-time work.

Good luck!

What more things should I do to improve my profile for Deferred MBA program applications

Hello dibyangshu,

Thank you for sharing. One thing to note is that if you studied in India, you should report the raw percentage / CGPA rather than converting it to 4.0. Unless, of course, the school uses a 4.0 scale.

I recommend really working to maximize your GMAT score. Given that you are targeting top b-schools including some of the M7s, you will want to demonstrate that you are prepared for the rigor of their programs. Have you taken a practice test?

While test scores and academics are not the be-all and end-all, they are very important – particularly since deferred MBA programs are very competitive. Additionally, since you are applying from an overrepresented applicant pool, differentiating yourself with a strong GMAT score will be key.

You have a good mix of work experience, achievements, and extracurriculars. Remember that the ones you choose to highlight in your applications should fit together to tell a consistent and compelling story.

You will also want to think about refining your post-MBA goals. Since consulting is a very common career goal, you want to share how you will make your unique mark. Perhaps you intend to develop a specific area of expertise within the consulting industry or focus on a certain sector. You must go beyond simply stating what position you are hoping to achieve and share your vision for improving your chosen field or company.

Feel free to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com if you are looking for application assistance – it is never too early to begin the process! Personal MBA Coach helps a lot of folks get into top deferred MBA programs each year. Take a look at our services to learn more.

Best wishes,

Hi dibyangshu,

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Talking about your stats, your undergrad GPA is good. You should focus on your GMAT and aim for 730+ to maximize your chances. You have a good internship experience. You’ll need to showcase your learnings from them. Talk about the projects you have undertaken and created an impact. Your ECs and achievements are notable and should be highlighted in your applications. You have done so many amazing things. The adcoms put a high value on the candidate's beliefs in giving back to society, make sure you exhibit the same. Your extracurricular activities contribute to your profile’s 'impact' element, which makes you stand out. They have a wider view on the profile and principles, which aids b-schools in deciding whether an applicant is a good match for b-school or not. You should be able to present it really well. You may want to read the article on what b-schools look in the candidate for deferred MBA. This will help you to get some better insights. :)

You will need to explain in deep about your post-MBA goals. You need to know for which industry you want to do consulting and second how you define "creative consulting firm". So, defining your post-MBA goals better will help you get some experience for those set goals and so a better argument for your goals.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall, I think you are a full package, and the only thing you have to work hard on is your GMAT and story-telling (which actually is the deal-breaker). You seem to have a great shot at your target schools (just classify them as to reach, target, and safety schools and then strategize application accordingly).

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Hello mmadan8,

Thank you for sharing. You have a strong GMAT/academics and a nice list of target schools (Personal MBA Coach recommends applying to 5 to 7 to maximize your chances of acceptance).

Your internship and extracurricular experiences look good as well. As a deferred MBA applicant, you will want to show admissions directors that you are committed to studying business but also want security to chart your own path before you start school.

What are your post-MBA goals? Strong deferred MBA candidates will have a clear sense of their goals, though long-term goals end up being a lot harder to define because you are early in your career. While these goals can definitely change over time, successfully articulating your post-MBA goals often comes only after working with a consultant on your applications.

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com if you are looking for help with goal development and other key components of your applications. We work with a lot of international applicants, and we would be happy to discuss how we can help set you up for success! Take a look at our services to learn more.

Best,

Hi mmadan8,

Thank you for sharing your profile. You have a competitive GMAT score. I can see some really great experiences in your profile. For deferred programs, the adcoms are concerned with the diversity of experience and learning that the candidate has accumulated at the undergraduate level. You will need to highlight all your internship experiences in your apps thoroughly and your learnings from them. Talking about the initiative you have taken and contributing to society in this pandemic will show your quality of giving back to society.

What are your post-MBA goals? Being a deferred candidate, you must be clear about your post-MBA goals. You are a young college senior, you must be sure about your professional goals, and as you are applying for the deferred program, it means MBA is a definite route to those goals. So, explaining your short-term and long-term goals is very important.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have a good profile and shot at your targeted schools. You will need to define your post-MBA goals very well, and then everything will depend on how you connect the dots and create a great narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile in length and your further chances to b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

To begin with, I would like to focus on the fact that, as you are applying to a deferred MBA program which is one of the most competitive programs out there, your overall profile definitely falls under a stellar category which is in sync with the background of the rest of the applicant pool.
Starting your evaluation, your academic records with respect to your GPA and potential GMAT score showcases your stronghold in the academic front which allows you to apply to top schools without any hesitation.
Now talking about your work experience, you have a great portfolio with regards to your professional endeavours which includes your entrepreneurial ventures which showcase your leadership capabilities. Similarly, your stint as an intern at some of the top firms further adds value to your profile and vouches for the holistic exposure you’ve garnered through your practical experiences.
Furthermore, when talking about your extracurricular activities, you have again hit the nail on the head with a plethora of diverse activities under your belt. Most importantly, these endeavours showcase your strong leadership role in contributing towards the upliftment of the society. You can further enhance your profile by maybe shedding light on any certifications or courses that you have undertaken to showcase your constant drive to learn.
Coming to the schools that you can target based on your profile, you can aim to target schools like Harvard Business School, Stanford GSB, Yale, Chicago Booth UVA, MIT, and Wharton where your chances of acceptance would be around 50%.
Considering the fact that you have an excellent profile, you need to supplement it with an equally great application. Your application is basically what can differentiate you from the rest of the equally competitive application pool. You also need to showcase your journey and how you are a great value addition to the school. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

That said, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, I would recommend you to check out our flagship ALL-IN-ONE service, which has helped 3500+ applicants get into their dream schools. You would also be entitled to end-to-end consulting combined with unlimited edits on your application documents. Not only this, you’d be consulted by a top B-school alumnus who’d be helping you directly with your application process, right from finalizing the right schools and submitting an impactful application to the school to preparing you for the interview and bagging scholarships!

Hi anusharajjj123,

Thank you for your post. Deferred MBA programs can be competitive. Because of this, you will definitely want to aim for a 750 GMAT if you want to get into a top US program.

Additionally, successful applicants often have demonstrated considerable leadership. It sounds like you have some strong experience to highlight from your internships and extracurriculars.

As for your target school list, you have a good list and a number of programs. Personal MBA Coach suggests applying to 5 to 8 schools to maximize your chances of acceptance. You may also want to look into Berkeley Haas Accelerate Access, Yale SOM Silver Scholars, Chicago Booth Scholars, and Stanford GSB Deferred Enrollment. (Note that Stanford GSB and Yale SOM take applications in January as well if you want to get a head start.)

Should you secure a strong GMAT and put together compelling applications, I think you certainly have a chance at some of these programs. While it is great to read that you have started to think about your post-MBA goals, strong candidates often best articulate their goals after working together with a consultant.

Feel free to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to continue discussing your candidacy and application strategy. And, take a look at our Deferred MBA Packages to learn how we can help you put together strong applications for your target programs!

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

You have great stats, extracurricular activities and achievements. What isn't clear is your age and if those achievements are part of full-time work experience or things you have done on the side, say while in school. Can you please clarify?

Also, I would recommend you really think hard about your career goals. They aren't terribly unique and that might not win over the AdCom at Stanford. I'm sure there's more depth to what you have posted, but just wanted you to keep that in mind.

Please reach out to our team at Admissionado if you'd like to discuss your profile and a potential strategy for this season or when you do end up applying.

In that case, I take it you're looking at the Deferred MBA program at Stanford? If so, I think your statistics are appropriate and you have some interesting part-time experiences.

I say go for it. It'll be uber competitive because of the limited seats and your competitive demographic cohort, but you have nothing to lose. You can always re-apply through the normal full-time MBA admissions process after you have gained a few years of full-time experience.

Again, focus on refining those career goals. Saying you want to do consulting to then do venture is not going to wow the AdCom. Think creatively and have fun with the application!

Good luck,
Admissionado
