Hi ad2001,

Thanks for your post!

Starting with your stats you have a relatively high GPA of around nine and several internships that would provide an all-over boost to your profile. I suggest you to improve your GRE for stanford.

Now since Stanford deferred MBA program looks for critical qualities like Impeccable academic records, Leadership qualities, Communication skills, and Strong analytical & quantitative abilities, you must align your profile accordingly! In this case, your Journals, ECAs, and Internships play a vital role since you lack any professional experience; work experience gained during ECAs or internships provides an opportunity to shine and demonstrate your professional promise. Moreover, your ECAs help demonstrates an aspect of your personality, creativity, and cognitive aptitude while drafting research paper and journals enhance your soft skills. So what I would say is add all the relevant experiences and skill-set developed through your ECAs and internships to make your profile more robust! You can take a look at top deferred MBA programs to include some safety schools in your list.

Overall your profile is good, but Stanford can be a stretch. I suggest adding more schools to your list. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Can someone help me evaluate if a deferred MBA application is a good option for me? Since many applications have no fee, I was thinking of giving it a shot. I've given the GRE and confirmed from most schools that they evaluate it on the same level as the GMAT.
Nationality: Indian
Gender: Female
Major: Economics, Minor in Computer science. My college is currently ranked at number 1 by the official Government of India rankings consistently. It's the best undergraduate, non-tech college in the country.
My coursework includes macroecon, microecon, stats, econometrics, data analysis (R software), financial econ, Python, DBMS (MySQL), HTML & Computer networks.
GPA: 9
GRE: 325 (160V, 165Q)
Internships: Intern at Indian Oil (PSU, Fortune 500 company), McCann Worldgroup (World's largest advertising agency), Daniel J. Edelman Holdings & Observer Research Foundation
Extra-curriculars: Vice President of my department, organized over 20 over sessions and generated revenue streams, created an alumnae committee from scratch and reached out to over 700 till date.
I have 3 research papers, a pending journal publication, 2 published research commentaries on economics and business and two podcast episodes under mental health & economics.

Achievements: Standing placement offer from one of the world's largest banks.

This is a general outlay, any help or advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Neha, thanks for replying. I understand Stanford is a stretch and I actually wasn't looking to apply to it either, I'm aware of the stellar profiles they take in. Would you suggest any other deferred programs that I may have a decent shot at?

Stanford GSB on a deferred MBA basis is always difficult. The program is just so selective given its ranking and how few slots are available. There's nothing saying you wouldn't have a shot - it is just random at a certain point - but as previously noted, you may want to hedge with other options.

How serious are you interested in deferred MBA programs? There are now many options of varying difficulty. You can make this an entire process in and of itself, so how much time and to how many programs would you consider applying?

We are all happy to help but more guidance would be key to giving you specific and actionable advice.

Hi, point of clarification-I am not looking to crack Stanford, in fact, I never even mentioned it. I put down my query to take opinions on whether deferred MBA are worth a shot or not, and any recommended schools according to my scores and profile?

Yes, they are worth a shot. The way we see it is you have a low-risk chance at having a seat at a top MBA program before you have even started to work. You really don't have much to lose except the time and cost of applying to these programs.

If you were not to get in but decided in a few years time you wanted to apply again, you'd be welcomed without any real handicap. Full-time work experience (and other changes) will drastically change your profile, so you would effectively be applying with a new application.

The real thing you have to consider is if you want to target a top, top program or you want to go for more middle-ranking schools via the deferred MBA process. As it stands now you're probably looking at the latter at best. If you want a few years and apply with work experience, improved ECs, and other changes, you might be able to improve the ranking of the programs on your list.

Hi ad2001,

I’m glad that you found the evaluation helpful now; for more school suggestions, I would say,
(considering no application fee)

1) Darden’s Future Year Scholars program is an excellent opportunity to join a top business school even before you graduate. Moreover, If admitted to the program, you have the option of deferring your MBA enrollment for two to four years post-graduation. (no application fee)

FUTURE YEAR SCHOLARS PROGRAM ROUND 1- Application Deadline - 12 April 2022
FUTURE YEAR SCHOLARS PROGRAM ROUND 2 - Application Deadline - 2 August 2022

2) Emory Goizueta MBA Early Admission - the program is open to applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. The program welcomes both business and non-business majors to apply. If admitted, candidates have the option to defer enrolling into the program for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 years. (no application fee)

Round 1: April 6, 2022, | Round 2: June 1, 2022

3) Berkeley Haas Accelerated Access - anyone can apply to the program as a final year undergraduate or graduate student. However, if applying as a graduate student, you are only eligible to enroll in your graduate program immediately after undergrad and without full-time work experience.

Deadline: April 28, 2022, Decision: June 16, 2022

On evaluating your profile in terms of the top deferred program, I would advise you to go through the above-mentioned deferred MBA programs' eligibility and essay requirements as I think these are the most relevant programs aligning with your profile. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hey, Gdivyam,

Thanks for your post

First, I would like to say you did well, backing 700 in your GMAT, so kudos on that! Also, you have a good overall GPA; however, to make your profile more robust, I would suggest adding a tad more about your overall statistics and information about any additional courses, certifications, and academic accolades.

The internship experience doesn’t link with your graduation major; hence, it would be important to present this positively! Moreover, it would help if you mentioned your roles & responsibilities, any professional accolades, or even leadership opportunities. Furthermore, it would help to mention any international exposure or experience as it’s something the adcom looks for in a candidate’s profile!

Coming to your ECAs, I suggest briefly stating your ECAs by adding points of responsibilities, skill development, and overall social development. For instance, I suggest you go through our article on Significance of ECAs for MBA Application, to understand the importance of drafting exemplary ECAs essays!

Finally, I want to emphasize that AdComs aren’t all for scores. Instead, they assess a candidate’s complete profile, which includes a variety of traits, ideals, and skills. You must demonstrate in your application how earning a deferred MBA at Stanford business school would advance your career and develop you as a stronger leader. Hence, your goal should be to frame your unique abilities to make you a “suitable” candidate. For further references, I suggest you go through our article on What are your mba odds of getting into top MBA programs?, to have a better understanding. That’s all for now; if you’d like, we’d be happy to get on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your possibilities in more detail and properly address your worries. We’ll be pleased to help you and make your profile stand out more. So feel free to book a FREE session with us at your convenience.

Coffee with MBA and Beyond

Gdivyam:

You have a really nice profile - congrats on all your accomplishments to date.

That being said, I don't think you are a terribly strong candidate for deferred (early entry) admissions. These programs, particularly GSB, take very few applicants. If you are a "traditional" candidate, you must have impeccable qualifications. You have great credentials, but I don't see the differentiation. Your GMAT score is good, but not amazing. Your experience is solid, but not game changing. Your extracurricular involvement is notable, but not out of this world.

Apply now if you wish, but I would recommend waiting at least a couple of years before applying through the normal admissions process. You will have time to build on your already great profile to optimize your odds of being admitted.

If you want to discuss further or would like to speak to someone on my team about how best to apply now, please reach out to us for a free consultation: https://admissionado.com/free-consultation/
