At 655 on the current GMAT, you're sitting at approximately the 90th percentile, which maps to roughly 700 to 710 on the classic scale. That puts you inside the working range for ISB and IIM ABC; where the file gets decided is whether five years as a military officer reads as structured institutional service or as genuine leadership with stakes, decisions, and scope.
- Six years of experience split between industry and the armed forces is unusual in these pools, and unusual only helps if the essays make the military role concrete: team sizes commanded, high-pressure decisions made without supervision, and any operational complexity that transferred across contexts.
- The NIT Dgp academics are strong, and an 8.79 CGPA sitting alongside a 655 on the current GMAT removes the quantitative concern a reader might otherwise flag when they see a defence background.
- For LBS and INSEAD, the post-MBA goal statement will carry more weight than it does for the Indian schools, because both programmes will want a credible answer to why an international MBA now, given that a military career rarely points to a single obvious next step in the way that, say, four years in consulting does.
- The one risk worth addressing early: six years of total experience is on the younger side for INSEAD's typical class, so the essays need to do the work of showing accelerated responsibility rather than simply accumulated tenure.
The career switch from defence to whatever comes next needs a specific and believable answer in the goals statement, because vague post-MBA ambitions will stand out more sharply against an unconventional background like this one.
