Thanks for the inputs ISBeacon & MBAandBeyond! I reckon from your inputs that I need to first focus on getting the maximum GMAT score I can, and not worry too much about my "profile" per se. I do have a follow up question.

How much time, on an average, have you seen candidates spend on building their applications? Primarily the essays. Like mentioned in my previous, my GMAT is on October 19th, and I am spending 100% of time on preparing for the same. While doing so I am getting anxious about whether I will have enough time to draft a good essay (not calling it perfect because well, there is no such thing as perfect :)). So just wanted the gauge the same.
two to four weeks should be more than sufficient. Wishing you all the best!

Hey @xlsx

I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your experience at KPMG should be highlighted in your profile. You should also try to quantify your achievements whenever possible. For instance, instead of saying "won a few awards," mention the specific awards and their significance. Also, focus on the impact you brought on the company.

A strong GMAT score can really open doors, especially for scholarships. Aim for a 695+ score. About those extracurriculars, try to focus on highlighting your work and the outcomes, like you managed a team- so highlight leadership skills gained and how you try to cumulate it with your work. Are there any social causes you have been a part of apart from one that you have mentioned, try highlighting your role in it and how it impacts the people you helped. Social work is regarded highly by the adcoms.

Overall, you're in a good spot. Feel free to connect for a detailed discussion.

Dear all,

I am planning on applying to ISB in R2 this year (2024). Below is my profile, would be great if I could get some inputs on what should be improved. Please note, I am in the process of taking the GMAT and shall update the score on Oct 19'24 as that is the day I have my test. Rest of the profile is below. Another purpose is to also understand the target GMAT score - I know higher the better, but would still like to know a realistic target :)

23 YO Indian Male

Acads:
10th - 10 CGPA (2016) - school topper
12th - 91.9% (2018)
UG - BBA - 3.64/4 or 9.08/10 - Christ University 2021 graduate. Can I play this off as the fact that I did it form the most prestigious / coveted school for BBA? Christ University is ranked #1 in India for BBA.

Extra cirriculars:
1. Theatre - multiple street plays, mimes, & improv competitions - won a few too (don't have the certificates handy for most except 1 - lost them all while moving during covid)
2. Organizing Committee member in college since 1st year - went on to lead a team of 3 in third year and was the Core Committee member (again, certificates were lost while moving - I could probably get the professor however to write me an email, will that work?)
3. Part of the entrepreneurship cell for the department
4. Led a few events / held leadership positions during school (house captain, etc.) - are these going to be relevant? I assume not since these were essentially 6-8 years ago.

Have volunteered for a month with Children of the World (India) Trust as well.

Work Experience:
Completed 3 years with KPMG India in July'24.
Associated with the risk consulting practice of the firm and have gotten promoted from Analyst > Associate Consultant > Consultant in a span of just 2.5 years. Won a few awards for exemplary performance. Highest rated employee in my band in the last 2 performance years (total years of employment is 3 hence, 66%). Experience in multiple kinds of projects (transformation, internal audits, gap & risks analysis, data analytics, process re-engineering, enterprise risk management, etc.) in multiple industries (ITeS, E-commerce being the primary ones, financial services, real estate, electronics manufacturing, industrial marketing being secondary industries). Have also been involved in CXO level discussions - I directly interacted with the CEO & COO of a real estate project to understand their pain points, the current processes, presented our analysis and reports to them and came up with the strategy going forward jointly working with the VPs of the project.

My recommender would either be the partner who heads the service line or a director in the firm who I have most recently (and extensively) worked with.

Please let me know if there are other details you would require that can help build a case. Appreciate all the help!

TIA!

Dear austin316,

The admissions committees of leading business schools evaluate candidates' profiles from multiple perspectives. They consider GMAT scores, academic performance (including 10th, 12th grades, and graduation), extracurricular activities, work experience, and the clarity of both short-term and long-term goals. Your profile meets the criteria for most of these parameters, showcasing a strong GMAT score, consistent academic performance, and meaningful extracurricular involvement that demonstrates a clear impact. This combination contributes to a well-rounded and potentially strong profile for the admissions committee.

However, your chances of being shortlisted for an interview largely depend on how effectively you can weave these elements together in your admission essays. It is crucial to illustrate your journey, articulate your motivations for pursuing an MBA at this stage in your career, and clearly define your short-term and long-term goals. We would be delighted to engage in a detailed discussion about your profile and assist you throughout your application journey.

At Team FLY, we are a dedicated group of ISB alumni committed to supporting prospective ISB candidates with profile positioning, essay critiques, and interview preparations.

Please feel free to book a 15-minute free session for a detailed discussion with us at: https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min

Dear ghanendra12,

We have summaized our evaluation below:

Highlights of Your Profile

Your profile has several strong aspects that make you a competitive candidate for business school admission:

- Unique work experience at DRDO that sets you apart from other applicants
- Demonstrated career progression and impact through multiple projects and patents
- Impactful extracurricular efforts, such as developing and commissioning medical oxygen plants in Telangana State under PM Care during COVID-19
- Bachelor's degree from a Tier 1 institution
- GMAT score close to the average of typical applicants

Areas for Improvement

The main challenge in your profile is your academic performance, which has not been top-notch. However, this has been mitigated to some extent by your decent GMAT score, which serves as a proxy for your ability to handle the academic rigor expected from an MBA program.

Realistic Chances and Recommendations

Your profile has potential, but your realistic chances of getting an interview shortlist depend heavily on how well you can tie everything together in your admission essays. It's crucial that you clearly illustrate your journey, motivations for pursuing an MBA at this point in your career, and your short-term and long-term goals.

We believe that with proper guidance and preparation, you have a good chance of success. We would be happy to assist you further with a detailed discussion of your profile and support you throughout the application process.

Hi deepankar99
I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your GMAT looks decent along with your GPA. However, your IIIT background looks pretty impressive. Your work towards the betterment of mental health is something which adds diversity to your profile and your long-term goal in the field adds further value.

To strengthen your application, try to quantify the impact of your freelance projects. For example, did your website increase user traffic by a certain percentage? Did you help your clients increase sales? These numbers can add weight to your achievements.

Hi ISBeacon , MBAandBeyond , and ARINGO

I just took my GMAT and the score is 665, do you think this would be a competitive score or shall I take another attempt? I would say I can definitely improve the score given that I was not able to prepare for the GMAT they way I had intended to. For a refresher, this is my profile as per my post earlier:

TIA!

Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks

665 is decent, but a higher score would not hurt.

Hi xlsx
A 665 looks good for ISB. However, if you believe you have the time for a retake and can significantly increase your score, a higher score will further strengthen your profile.
Good Luck!

Hey @xlsx , I hope all is well!

Your profile as a 23-year-old Indian male with a strong academic record, 3 years of work experience at KPMG, and a range of extracurricular achievements presents a solid foundation for your ISB application in Round 2. Being ranked as the top BBA program in India, it does add prestige to your undergraduate degree. Highlighting this as part of your narrative can help position you competitively. Professionally, your rapid promotion at KPMG and leadership in high-impact projects across industries demonstrate clear career progression and leadership potential, making you a compelling candidate. The work experience is diverse, and your direct interactions with CXO-level executives add credibility to your leadership skills. However, since you are relatively young with only three years of work experience (ISB’s average is closer to 4-5 years), you will need to leverage your leadership experiences and project ownership to offset this. Your 665 GMAT FE score can strengthen your competitiveness. Your extracurricular activities, especially in theater will help you add diversity in your profile. Getting a recommendation from a Partner or Director at KPMG, both of whom have worked closely with you, will further validate your skills and leadership potential. Ensure your recommender highlights your client management, problem-solving abilities, and leadership qualities. As B- schools value clear career goals, ensure you articulate a strong post-MBA vision. Given your background in consulting and risk management, a goal in management consulting, strategic advisory, or risk management would be a logical next step. Highlight how ISB’s resources (faculty, network, placements) will help you achieve this.

Overall, your profile looks strong, but success in Round 2 will depend on well-crafted essays that link your consulting experience to your future goals and how well you differentiate yourself and show readiness for an MBA at this stage of your career.

Let’s discuss more about your work experience, awards & achievements, leadership skills, impact creation and extracurriculars. Feel free to book a free profile evaluation session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Pl go ahead. As a standard process, ISB would be keen to know the reasons for break. Make sure you have a valid answer for that. While it is not a negative, but answer must be cogent.

Best!
