Profile Evaluation for Stern

Question

Hi,
I am a male engineer from India working in Samsung Research Institute. I am planning to apply to Johnson for Fall 2022. Please review my profile and provide inputs on the points where I can improve
GMAT : 740 (V39/Q50)
Toefl: 111
GPA 3.19 Did B.tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering
Work Experience: 5 years by the time I will start my MBA.
I have been working as a software engineer and have also lead a team during one of the projects for 5G tech. I have already received one promotion and have been recognised by various awards for my contributions but these awards are for technical contribution and not for leadership. I do have lead teams for few assignments
I aspire to transition into Product Management role in tech firms like Google, Amazon,etc post my MBA.
-I like swimming and have trained in it for 3 yrs and have also participated in various competitions during my school days.
-I also like playing cricket and have represented my school and college teams.
-I also enjoy cooking mainly Indian quisines.
What are my chances of getting into Stern?

harshsax : You will have a shot at Stern but it will be difficult. Stern is very competitive because of its location in New York City, making it very particularly desirable for international students. It also tends to attract the finance type (both incoming and outgoing), which adds another layer of competitiveness. Do you have any extracurricular activities since graduating from college? You need strong leadership accomplishments and extracurricular involvement. I am just not seeing it from what you disclosed. Your GPA is definitely below the Stern average even if you are coming from engineering. You have a solid GMAT score so that will help, but not make up for it. I like your career goal, but I am not sure if it is the smartest one for Stern. Stern isn't exactly known for being a feeder into the PM roles in Big Tech. It's also not a terribly unique career goal. Maybe you already have this in mind (and the description in your post is too general), but is there a way you can perhaps find nuance in a long-term tech role but that fits NYC/NYU? Do you also have any interesting life or professional stories that might help you differentiate yourself? That's going to be really key as you are probably aware you are coming from a competitive demographic. Again, you will be competitive but you are going to need to write killer essays and bring more "meat" to your application to get an admission from Stern. To begin with, your 5 years of work experience as a Software Engineer would put you at par with the rest of the competition since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience. However, since you will be facing competition from candidates with work experience hailing from the big 4 firms, showcasing your journey, the learnings gathered through this experience, and the impact created would allow you to differentiate yourself and thereby gain an upper hand with such competent profiles. Certain key highlights in your career such as that one promotion, numerous awards for your technical contribution would also play a vital role here.

Furthermore, you can also shine light on the leadership and managerial skills that you developed in this role by managing teams for numerous assignments as it would bring to light varied skills and help put together an impactful application.

Moving on, academically, your undergraduate GPA of 3.19 is pretty much on the average front, but in the case of an MBA, it will not significantly matter as an MBA focuses more on the quality of work experience that an applicant has. Hence, you need not fret much about it.

For your extracurriculars, you have a lot of participation in activities such as Swimming, Cooking, Cricket, during your undergrad, which are impressive value additions. However, you should highlight a more recent endeavor since it’s been some time since you completed your undergraduate. Thus, you could take up social volunteering work (in collaboration with NGOs). This would also shine light on your empathetic nature and your drive to give back to society, and thus strengthen your application.

Coming to your GMAT, an overall score of 740 is pretty impressive and your chance of getting accepted into schools like NYU or Cornell stands at around 50%, as these are dream category schools. That said, with a view to hedge your bets wisely, listed below are some more schools in the dream and competitive category:
Dream (chance of acceptance around 50%): Duke Fuqua, Michigan Ross, Berkeley
Competitive (chance of acceptance around 60-70%): Mendoza, Northeastern, Babson
