Would really appreciate your take on my profile! Thanks in advance!

Academics/GMAT
25 / Asian-American Male (27 at time of matriculation)
GPA: 3.01 BS Computer Engineering / English Minor, Public Ivy (US Top 50 - one of the UCs)
GMAT: 720 Q48 V40 (Taken with minimal studying. Currently studying for re-take - aiming for 740+)

Work Experience
1)IT Consultant - Filler job to repay student loans for 9 months while awaiting training after graduation. Strong performance marks.
2)Marine Corps Communications Officer, stationed in Japan (about a year out from applying next year to matriculate Fall 2017 - service obligation ends Spring 2017).
Graduated in top 10% of communications officer course (4/50 with GPA of 96%)
Year 1: Led platoon of 20+ Marines and managed $4 Million+ in telecommunications equipment to support squadron of 200+ Marines. Planned/executed communications support for 11 multinational exercises throughout Asia Pacific and planned telecommunications for 2 humanitarian relief missions. Led maintenance improvement effort resulting in 15% increase in equipment readiness. Managed procurement of over $160k in new gear and implemented new concept of employment that reduced equipment load and extended communication range. Awarded Navy Achievement Medal for impact/performance. Selected in 10 months to fill a more senior position.
Now: Staff-level position managing and advising C-suite equivalent on all aspects of communications (tactical/radio/telecommunications/IT/cybersecurity) for headquarters unit supporting 6 squadrons with over 1000+ Marines and 40+ aircraft. Planned/executed communications support for one of the largest exercises (in terms of aircraft flight operations) in recent history. Planned/executed telecommunications support for higher-level multinational exercises in various countries involving complex aviation operations.

Consistently ranked in top 20% of peers. Will have 5 years WE at time of matriculation.

EC:
Led a few cultural exchange/military PR volunteer events with the local community. Involved with Japanese community church to provide after-school facility/meals to less fortunate children. Led efforts to connect American military with local community and encourage cultural exchange as well as lead service efforts to promote goodwill.

Led hunger/homeless volunteer group for a year in college (weekly meals with the homeless, shelter work). Led first on-campus bake sale in history to raise money for childhood hunger (raised over 300$ with no baking experience, safe to say it was not me who did the baking)

Hobbies are weightlifting, martial arts, technology, traveling (13 countries so far), learning new things, piano, photography, and reading.

Speak Mandarin fluently, Spanish at a basic conversational level, and very rudimentary Japanese.

Career focus Post MBA
Interested in an international GM/Leadership Dev/project or product manager role in tech industry. Still in research phase.

No real extenuating circumstances for low UG GPA; academics were not a priority at the time (other priorities - part-time job, extracurriculars/volunteer commitments, English minor, and applying for Officer program).
- Alternative Transcript (both done through UCLA Extension): Accounting - A, Microeconomics - B (might take a stats class if this will help)

Target Schools
Safety: UW Foster

Sweet Spot: UCLA, UVA Darden/Ross

Stretch: Haas, INSEAD, LBS

I would greatly appreciate any insights. I'm fairly early in the school research stage so I'm open to any suggestions especially ones that specialize in tech and place heavily in international roles; I've probably missed something. Thank you for your time!

Hey there dude!!
Very good to hear from you.

Sooooooo overall the main thing is that your experience as a Marine Corps Communications Officer has the potential to be very interesting and very strong, and making the most of that in your profile is one of the best ways to make the strongest story - not just in terms of getting out your achievements, but also your leadership foundation and the motivation for your goals. The ECs you have done at the same time are pretty cool and will add a bit of dimension and depth to your profile as well.

The two major "Weak spots" are your GPA and your "Filler job". As far as the GPA goes, you have already done a good job of counterbalancing that by hitting a 720 on your GMAT (yes, a 740 would be better if you feel like you can hit it), and you did go to a good school as well. As for the "Filler job", well I don't know enough about it yet to really comment on it, but let's stay that you want to come up with a good story as to why you took this job (Esp. if its not impressive) that makes sense personally as well as professionally.

For your proposed school list, basically I'd say your auto-evaluation is spot on, so go you! (Isn't one of the greatest qualities to "know thyself" ?). And basically my take is similar. Top 10 schools are stretches (but possible with the right story) Tier II schools are your sweet spot and anything lower is a "Safe school".

Overall, I see a lot of potential for a great story here, so go to it!!!
Best,
Jon

Thanks so much for your insight Jon!

You got it sir!
Good luck.
and if there's anything else, you just drop a line.
