· Education: SRM University, 9.2, B. Tech Telecommunications Engineering
· GMAT: 710 (Q49, V36)
· Work experience: 6 years
1. 2 years in Infosys (IT), 3 promotions from Systems Trainee to Senior Systems Engineer
Awarded Top Performer twice, by client too.
2. Switched fields to Advertising Media, joined family business. Own my company now, increased turnover 5x times, directed and produced advertising films, expanded product and service offerings, heading teams of 10+ cameramen, editors and designers - been 4 years.
· Extracurricular activities:
1. Undergraduate in Kathak, Indian classical dance form
2. House captain in college, led over 50 students
3. Dance convener in college, organised, participated and won some inter college events.
4. Launched the entrepreneurship club in college
· Post-MBA goals:
To work with Entertainment media companies in the short term and in the long term start my own production house.
· Target schools:
UCLA, NYU, Columbia, UC Berkeley, USC

Intending to retake the GMAT to increase score to 730-740

I think your profile is strong enough to be competitive some Top 30 schools. As you have good diversity of work experience, your profile is standing out of common IT Engineer profile.
Adding Schools: Darden, Ross
If you get above 730, you have very Good chance of securing admission in T10.

Hi shreshthajain20! Thank you for reaching out on Stratus' thread - I'm happy to provide my thoughts on your profile. I really like your job experience - particularly that you had three promotions in two years in your previous job, and also can demonstrate impact and leadership now in your family business over the past four years. Your undergrad extracurriculars were great - do you have any current extracurricular activities? Schools ideally want to see those continue beyond your undergrad years into the present, and ideally to also demonstrate leadership and impact.
You seem to have done a great job targeting the top MBA programs in media and entertainment. As you probably know, the average GMAT scores at Haas, CBS, and NYU are higher than those at USC and UCLA, so with your current score those schools would be more difficult to get into. If you are able to raise your score as hoped, I think you have a good chance at any of these schools. Someone else mentioned Darden, and Booth is another school that calls out media and entertainment as an area some of their MBA students specialize in.
Given you work in a family business, you're right to carefully consider who to choose for your two recommenders. Definitely do NOT use a family member, even if you report directly to him or her. Do you have any mentors who are familiar with your work? Or alternately any close clients, suppliers, accountants, etc? If you are involved in any extracurriculars currently, is there anyone there who could speak to your leadership? Although four years ago, your former boss at Infosys might also be a good option, particularly if you have kept in touch. Basically you want to find people who best know you and how you work, and ideally can compare you to your peers favorably.
One other thing I would want to know a lot more about from you is why you want an MBA - given you want to continue in what sounds like a very similar business and you already run what sounds like a successful company, what are your gaps that you think an MBA will help you fill? Also, do research about each of the programs you are considering so you can explain why each of them is well suited to help you fill those gaps.
